Kailey Knetzer reviewed Precipice, Orange and Black and Champlain North Ridge Trail Loop

We did this hike as a way of connecting the Beehive to the Precipice trail and it was so incredibly difficult after already hiking that far. My legs were absolute jello on the Orange and Black which was actually more difficult than the Beehive and precipice in my opinion! A rating of moderate is not giving this trail true justice.

The more difficult bigger brother of the Beehive Trail. This trail has so much upper arm work between the ladder rungs and the boulder climbing to get to the top. If you are afraid of heights there are a few skinny areas I wouldn't recommend looking down. This is a full body workout kind of trail but it is so much fun! For sure an experience you don't want to pass up.

If you looking for something adventurous that is a little easier than the Precipice this is the trail for you! Plenty of metal rungs and ladders to get you to the top so this is not just your average walking trail there is a lot of climbing involved. There are also a few drop off ledges involved so if your afraid of heights keep this in mind. I would not do Acadia without doing this trail though!!

Took the more difficult route up to the top based off previous comments on here. Was NOT disappointed. Highly recommend taking that route as the views were amazing and the climb didn’t feel quite as steep since you had things to look at. We went at 7pm on a Saturday and were the only people on the trail. The lakes are gorgeous and the waterfall was a nice sight as well. Highly recommend this one.

Did this trail as the end part to our beehive loop today. Thankful it was so flat and partially paved as it made it a lot easier for our sore legs. The lake is beautiful and an amazing shade of blue, however this is all you see for the entire almost 4 mile hike is that one lake. And it’s very crowded as it is so easy many people from
The chateau come out and hike it. I wouldn’t do it as a stand alone hike but it was the perfect flat way to end our loop.

Absolutely loved this hike!! It is a continuous up hill the entire way but felt like it was gradual enough to not be a hard climb. Mirror lake is on this trail and it was a great side stop on the way to the top lake. Also the tea house was a perfect rest stop before moving on. Make sure you go early if that’s your plan, they open at 8am. Super busy by the afternoon!

For those of you wondering what the conditions are in the lake Louis area right now, we had absolutely no problems with this trail until we reach the last half mile. From there on we couldn’t figure out how to get around the snow. If you have shoe spikes or love a good rock scramble then it’s still 100% doable as we could see the cairn on the top of the mountain and were so frustrated we couldn’t get to it. Spent a good two hours trying though. Giving this trail a 5 because except for the snow it was a very gentle incline for the most part and a very enjoyable 4 miles up with great scenery. Highly recommend stopping by the Agnes lake tea house on your way.

A much needed hiking reprieve after doing Grandfather Mountain the day before. This trail and the waterfall views were well worth the couple of small hills. Not terribly crowded on the sunday that we went but I could see it being very popular especially in the summer.

Was not expecting how truly steep this hike would get in the last mile. But it was worth every single step once you get to the top. My legs were really feeling this one the next day but if you are in the area this trail up to grandfather is well worth the day spent. It is truly a trail you will not forget. Just wish there were a few more views on the profile trail on the way up to Grandfather. But it sure beats the $20 to just do Grandfather.

Giving this one a three star rating because after doing some research and learning about the $20 per person admission we decided to hike up profile trail rather than pay $100 for a day hike. The problem with this is that once you get up you have to hike the entire mountain then hike back down the profile trail in decent timing because if someone comes to pick you up they also have to pay $20. This led to a major time crunch for my group because we did not expect this trail to be as physically challenging as it was. It is a very fun trail with ladders and ropes and bouldering but it is a full day event especially if you hike the profile trail up to Grandfather. I would highly recommend doing your research before taking this mountain on.

Our group loved this hike. Very easy flat trail to a wonderful cave. The cave was much larger than expected. Gave this one a 3 star only because of the off the beaten path feel to it. There is no parking lot and no trail head to this one. You simply drive to the end of Sand Cave road and park in the grass next to the dirt road looking entrance to the hike. After you get on the trail it is very easy to follow. Once again a very enjoyable hike that not a lot of people visit so if you are looking for easy and remote this is the trail for you!

Giving this one a 4 star rating only because it is not 100% dog friendly. The falls were beautiful and the rock climbing to get up to the top at the end of the trail was a lot of fun and a big hit with everyone in our group. Except our poor dog who did not love being lifted over some of the rocks. The trail is well marked and easily accessible for dogs except for the last tenth of a mile which requires you to climb up a few rocks to get to the top of the falls and the parking lot. You could always turn back and walk back up the trail to the parking lot but the rocks were much shorter and a whole lot more entertaining. Well worth the drive out and such a fun hike to do. Recommend you be prepared to hike 2 miles or

Always a favorite of ours this is a most see if you are going to Shawnee. While a short very easy trail the real attraction is the rocks to climb all over. This trail is extremely popular and very busy so highly recommend getting there early if you want to take decent pictures of the place. Other than that even with the crowds everyone is spread out on the rocks so it isn't to crazy.

As previously mentioned in other comments this trail is basically an extended edition of the Rim Rock Trail. You start off from behind the beach house at Pounds lake and walk along to the end of the lake then through a canyon area until you hit in my opinion the best part of the hike which is the stairs up to the rock formations. I wish this part had been longer as the rest of the 3 mile hike is really just a nature walk. The rock formations really made this hike worthwhile for me. So if you are in it only for the rock formations then save yourselves 2 extra miles and do the Rim Rock trail instead. However if you have some extra time to your day the walk along the lake and through the canyon was very pretty, scenic, and an easy stroll. Would not rate this trail as "Hard" by any means.
