Justin BC reviewed Raven Rocks via Appalachian Trail

Great hike with a nice payoff. Saw a bear right at the trailhead before I even started the hike. Very rocky throughout, so it can be slow going, but also very scenic. Also has a natural spring part way through, so you can refill your water conveniently (still filtered it). A great way to start Earth Day this morning!

Great little trail. Went with my son to explore the waterfall and we were both impressed by it; much better than expected. We also loved the boulders and rock formations. Nice flora, too. Great place for a family hike where the kids can have some fun exploring. Will be back.

Some nice views of the Potomac. Watched a few kayakers doing their thing. Section A was unfortunately closed due to flooding, so section B was the backup hike. Only bumped into 2 other people on the trail. Saw a good number of deer on the towpath back to Anglers.

Fun place for families; easy little walk from the parking lot for a great view of the falls. There's another nice overlook on the other side of the park, from a higher vantage point. Both are worth stopping for. Keep driving around the park and you'll encounter several nice waterfall views, trailheads for more legitimate hiking trails, and likely several very friendly deer waiting to be fed by tourists (don't do it!). Overall, a very picturesque park filled with mature rhododendrons and evergreen trees.

Very quick leg stretcher from the trailhead, but a nice rock formation to check out and climb around on a little bit. Also checked out the nearby spring. Quick and easy walk.

Very picturesque place to be in the fall. This trail is short and easy with no particular destination or payoff, but it's just a pleasant place to be. There are a few nice camp spots along the trail; it would be a great place to just stop and exist for a while. Also great for families due to the easily manageable grade.

Justin BC reviewed Old Rag Mountain Loop Trail

A great day hike with spouse and friends. Old Rag is always a lot of fun, regardless of when you go. The weather was great (80 degrees and sunny) so the crowds were out, but the scramble didn't get too backed up in most sections. Beware of the flood of insects currently residing at the summit (they drove a lot of people off the summit during lunch hour). Also, the park rangers advised that although it might have seemed like a busy day, it was only moderately packed and that October is when this trail gets really jammed with leaf peepers. Worth knowing if you're planning a trip in the next month. They advised that the parking area would be completely full by 8:30 a.m. during the peak fall foliage season.

My best recommendation would be to get on this trail EARLY if you're looking for any degree of solitude and unobstructed scrambling at your own pace without blockages. But again, Old Rag is always a fun time, regardless of when and how you approach it. Not to be missed.

Fine for a little exercise (trail running). Great place to be if you're just looking for some solitude in the woods. Not the place to go if you're looking for big payoffs and epic views. Worth checking out for the solitude.

Hiked the bear rocks trail and camped near Red Creek. An excellent place to spend the night, nestled among moss-covered boulders on a bed of pine needles from the coniferous canopy overhead, listening to the ever-present gurgle of red creek. Nice!

We took the Fisher Spring Run trail to the Rohrbaugh Trail, to get to the Rohrbaugh Cliffs. Wow, what a scenic hike! The Fisher Spring Run trail is lush with ferns and rhododendron. The cliffs were excellent, and there are several nice campsites very close to the overlook.

The view is hard to beat. I think taking the AT up is probably the way to go. Rather than the paved and heavily trafficked pedestrian trail. Add this on top of the Andrews Bald hike from the same trailhead for a nice 1/2 jaunt with lots of views/payoff.

Spectacular! A great family hike. The bald is an excellent place to relax and snack after the trek down there. Or should I say fuel up for the climb out!

A good trail run with plenty of solitude when coming from the AT off of Rt. 50. Deer and rabbits are pretty tame.

I can't comment on the whole trail. We hiked with our 4-year old and carried our 1-year old, so we only went as far as the Buzzard Rock Overlook, had lunch, and returned back the way we came. This was an excellent little out and back hike. We were lucky, as the mountain laurel was in full bloom, and it is plentiful along this trail. So the trail was surrounded by white and pink blooms in some sections, almost creating the feeling of being in a narrow tunnel of color. It was pretty incredible. The footing was a bit rocky, but it gave our 4-year old no trouble, so nothing too strenuous for adult hikers in this first section of the trail. Also, we saw a limited number of other hikers, so the trail provided an intermediate level of solitude.

This trail never disappoints! I was happy to see my 4yo son manage the full circuit. Everyone had a great time on this hike. The tranquility of the sights and sounds on this hike are hard to beat.

Check out the little side trail to the left of the main trail at Ingals Overlook/Bonner Mountain... this little trail was better than the "main event" and offered nice views of a bucolic/pastoral landscape nestled in a picturesque valley. It also offered the opportunity to get off trail and find some wildlife, as well as a pleasant mountain creek.

This trail exceeded my expectations. The terrain was rocky and interesting throughout the climb, and the columnar jointing below one of the two viewpoints was especially impressive. You really don't get a sense of the scale of this rare geological feature until you're standing right below it (photos don't do it justice). This is a great trail if you're looking for something easily accessible from the North Entrance of SNP (just 10.4 miles in).

Nice trail that flattens out to a pleasant highland meadow. The trail typically offers views of Paris, VA, however Sky Meadows was enveloped in a thick blanket of fog during this hike and the Paris Overlook was completely obscured. This created an interesting atmosphere for our jaunt through the forests and fields, but I look forward to returning on a clear day to take in the views.

Was visiting TN and had time for one hike. I'm glad we chose this one!

Hiked the Overlook Trail and the Point Trail. Loved the entire hike. It's an easy trek, so it makes for a perfect family hike. We hiked it in the fall, and it offered a great mix of flora; a bed of leaves underfoot, passing by wild rhododendrons, broad-leaf deciduous trees and a variety of evergreens (Eastern Hemlock, Virginia Pine and Eastern White Pine). Put this diversity of plant life together with moss-covered rocks reminiscent of the PACNW and it was a really gorgeous hike. I'm surprised there haven't been more reviews and photos posted. The "Arches" offer a nice little cave to tuck into for lunch, and the large cliff you pass by on the way up is a sight to see all by itself.

The Point Trail narrows and ends at the convergence of the Obed River and Clear Creek. As it narrows, you get great views of the bluffs on either side of you. The rock climbers were making good use of the sheer rock faces the day we hiked, and we could see and hear them on their ascents.

    I highly recommend this hike!

Justin BC reviewed Snead Farm Dickey Ridge Loop Trail

This was selected as an easy trail for kids, and that turned out to be true (we just made it an out and back hike to Snead Farm to limit length, rather than doing the full loop). We also took the kids on the Fox Hollow trail, which I preferred, since it was a footpath through the forest rather than an old farm/utility road.

Decent trail for a quick family hike at the north end of the park. Very doable for 4-year-old legs. Forested the whole way, so it doesn't offer views of the valley, but the forest itself is scenic and pleasant.

This was a fun hike with varied terrain. The area that had been cleared by a forest fire was interesting to see. There's a highland meadow you walk through, as well as more forested areas, and a lot of rock hopping. In general, it's a very rocky trail, so wear solid footwear with good ankle support; it would be very easy to twist an ankle on this terrain.

There is what I would classify as a very minor "rock scramble," and some very interesting rock formations. There are also some really nice surprise pullouts on the trail, including some excellent camp sites with great views of the Valley. Ultimately, once you climb to the top of the rocks at the end of the trail, you get excellent 360 degree views.
