Julie Spigner reviewed Opal Creek to Jawbone Flats Loop

The trail is mainly on gravel. There is a fork in the trail with a mile marker sign posting information about (left) Jawbone Flats/Education Center and (right) Opal Pool. I went both ways and I highly recommend the trail on the right since it's much more beautiful and the trail is on red dirt. The miles of the entire trail is inaccurate because it depends on where you're going (Opal Creek swimming holes, Jawbone Flats, Old Mining area, Opal Pool). My friend, my dog and I hiked all over and ended this hike packing ten miles in our legs. Wear durable, waterproof hiking shoes. Your feet will thank you.

Of the forty something hikes mentioned in Falcon Guides’ Best Dog Hikes in Oregon, this trail made the list. It is definitely off-leash friendly (regardless of the leash-only sign posted at the parking lot by the trailhead). Not a really spectacular trail but it was cool to see the lighthouse and hang out at the beach. Easy 6 miles hike.

This trail is beautifully paved and well maintained. At postings, you will see a map displaying color-coded routes to help you decide which route to take based on length and areas of the hike. I would come back here again for another hike or bike ride. However, keep in mind this trail is not off-leash friendly. As a dog mama, I love when I'm able to take my dog hiking with me off-leash. Some portions of this trail are too close to the road for dogs to roam off-leash safely.

This is one of those one-timer trails where you feel satisfied after visiting one time with no desire of going back especially with a dog off leash. Too close to the road for comfort. One thing that made it worth to see is to see the St John bridge up close from the ground up but that’s about it.

Great easy trail to hike with my dog. There were other dogs and bikers on this trail.

This trail is easy and well maintained. I went hiking here with my puppy last weekend. This was my puppy's first waterfall hike and he loved it.

I went on this hike today with the intention of completing the trail of ten falls but had to cut it short due to downpours of rain I wasn't dressed appropriately for. I managed to see the south falls and some others before cutting it short. Walking behind this fall was amazing - there were orange moss growing on the lava based rocky surface behind the fall which was surreal. Sights of autumn leaves on trees opposite the fall is amiably clear and perfectly present.

I think the idea of hiking this trail was more attractive than actually hiking it. It was dark 90% of the time during my hike there. There were maybe 3-4 cool spots worth checking out but that's about it. If you like cave-hiking, then this would be for you (not really my thing). And like pretty much everyone else say, bring headlights and wear sturdy shoes!

This was one of the first hikes I completed after moving to the Pacific Northwest and the view at the top was spectacular with its panoramic view of all of the mountains in the area. Highly recommend this hike on a clear day!

I hiked some sections of this trail. Really good trail to hike anytime of the year! I was disappointed that the witch castle was vandalized. Nevertheless, this trail is great for Portlanders who want to hike and do not want to drive too far out to do it. AND...I saw some banana slugs here!

Bucketlist-worthy! The trail getting to the hot springs is relatively short and easy. Though the trail and the hot springs were heavily trafficked. The hot springs are gorgeous and well worth spending at least an hour or two there. To preserve this area, I would recommend USDA Forest Services to consider having a ranger present during operating hours to ensure visitors don't vandalize the beautifully natural area with their personable waste (feces and urine), litter (beer bottles and cans), maintain the ph levels of the hot springs.

This hike is amazing for snowshoeing! I look forward to do it again this year when winter comes around again.

This is one by far of my favorite hikes in Oregon. It wasn't easy to find this trail but with help of other hikers who we bumped into while we were there, we were able to find it. It is a short hike but also a steep one. We went in February and it was amazing there because there were almost no one there but us. :)
