way better than i expected... moderately flat until the last 2 miles then you switchback down beside some impressive waterfalls... still alot of water as of 8/12/17... this is also the PCT... i saw maybe 150 folks along the way on a Saturday... trailhead parking scared me... i thought there could easily be a thousand with that many cars

hiked from Cold Springs campground... saw several pheasants... the marmots ignored my vehicle... great hike to a beautiful lake with jagged peaks 3/4 around it... lots of trout and still some snow pack... some of the coolest pine trees that seem to love such an extreme environment

day hike from onion to Kearsage... my favorite hike so far in the Sierras... amazing views the whole way... seeing Bullfrog lake in the distance and the headwaters of the Kings River was a plus... it was like Dr. Suess and Dali designed these mountains... on the way up, two substantial waterfalls merge into the same lake...

great trail through a boulder field and meadow... what i would consider a great beginner trail running experience if i was a runner... just enough of a workout after some higher elevation hikes... wild berries were starting to produce...

went up about 5 miles... its all uphill... plenty of water as july is playing out... i suggest starting at 7 in the morning... i started at 7:30 and caught more direct sun than i wanted... its hot and wideopen for most of the first 3 miles

Great surprisr hike up the hill and through history. I started out around the lagoon, and thought i'd go to the beach. Next thing I knew, i was touring old bunkers and heading toward the lighthouse which was unfortunately closed. What a sort of post-apocolyptic site... remnants of San FRANCISCO's defense system from over a century ago. I even saw a bobcat on the prowl... Quite a number of kids' camps touring the area so i even got caught up in a game of tag...

while i used to consider myself an intermediate, this one took me back to beginner status... i consider myself lucky not to have hurt myself being not in the best of shape for this one... i highly recommend full suspension and a better bike than i took down... only about a half mile of uphill and beautiful scenery... coolest trail ive ever seen... first few miles are a breeze, then miles 3-5 are a rock garden... a few sketchy spots i had to walk... got a great shuttle service from Downieville Outfitters... enjoy it for me if you go because it scared me from returning unless i magically get a better bike

    7/3/17
on the trail by 9-ish... i met only 3 folks going up and had the watchtower to myself for 30 minutes... still snow around and its an easy trail up... i came down too far west out of the snow, followed the PCT the wrong direction for a bit and ended up bushwacking down to a FS road... walked it back NE to the parking area... i added about a mile to my hike... not sure exactly where i erred... i assume some folks access the area from the PCT and i followed the wrong tracks in the snow... some of the beat views i've ever seen in the Sierras... from Lassen Volcano to Donnèr Pass... highly recommend but it was busy around the 4th holiday as i headed down, 20 folks heading up

do it before 2 in the afternoon... it gets crowded when the tour buses drop folks off to this easy trail... i did it on the first day of summer... proceed in clockwise fashion around lake as long as high meltoff conditions exist... in the last mile there is currently shin high water level on the trail... lots of folks were barefoot... im glad i wore sandals...

its an uphill battle... a bit too much for me to go out and back in a day after the previous day's adventure... nice perspective of Hetch Hetchy... binoculars would have been fun with the long range views... i would only do it again if i was camping overnight... quite a number of folks on the trail but way less crowded than Yosemite valley.
