    JD Tanner

    Farmington, New Mexico

I am the Director of Recreation at San Juan College and have been leading outdoor adventure trips and teaching outdoor recreation courses for over 14 years. I have a B.S. in Outdoor Recreation from Southeast Missouri State University and a M.S. Ed in Recreation Administration from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. I am a former Leave No Trace Traveling Trainer for the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and was an instructor/trip leader at Southeast Missouri State University for six years before that. I am a certified Wilderness First Responder, an AMGA Climbing Wall Instructor, a Level II Challenge Course Practioner, and a certifying instructor for the Wilderness Education Association (WEA).

I teach Environmental Ethics, Expedition Backpacking, and International Mountaineering at San Juan College. When not “working” I am usually hitting the trails as an author for Falcon Guides, bagging peaks, hiking long trails, highpointing, or spending time with my wife and dogs outside.
