There are three trails at this location. The map you're seeing on this page is for the mountain biking trail. There is also a separate hiking trail, and horse trail. The three meet infrequently, so none of the various activities get into each other's way. From the hiking trailhead, picked up at the main parking lot, connects to The Paumanok Path. Follow the orange blazes around the park to make a complete loop of about 11 miles.

It's a hilly trail, unlike any other I've seen on Long Island.

As a hiking trail, this is just OK. The terrain is pretty even, the woods are quiet, and the wildlife is abundant--but this trail is owned by mountain bikers. A fine crew but a fast one, which requires that you pay attention to who/what's coming up behind you.

I got a solid 8 miles out of this park by setting off at the trailhead and linking up with the series of foot paths that start about a 1/2 mile in. I went from the blue trail to the yellow to the red to make a big loop that made the most of this pine barren park, while avoiding/not inconveniencing the bikers. If you follow my advice, keep an eye on your GPS as you approach the connections to the other colored trails. They can be easy to miss.

Set out early! I started at 5:30am and was the only person around. When I existed the wood around 9am the lot was completely full.

Along the way, I startled a few deer, found a turtle eating a mushroom on the trail, spotted a slew of birds, and past a bunch of knee high anthills.

Go early for birding. Being that this is a free Park, with a kids playground, open bathrooms, and ample parking, this place fills up during the day. It's a nice place for kids, as it's a big clean park packed with dogs. The hiking is pretty standard for Long Island, meaning very flat and a bit sandy in places. A well maintained Park, worth stopping by if you're in the area. Don't go out if your way though.

Very easy trail walking here. Major points for the trail terminating at a bay beach. If you bring younger kids who can’t do the entire walk, there is a halfway spot with a picnic table where you can turn around or take the path to the left and head back.
