Very well maintained, has some elevation changes, and bucolic views. The wildlflowers are coming in strong now. There are another 4-5 miles of trail that could be incorporated into this hike. Only downsides are the signage is a bit confusing (I got turned around once) and it is never truly isolated.

I did the "out" portion and continued on Cattail Pond Trail and several other trails to the east to make a 10-12 mile loop. It was a cloudless spring day and the wildflowers were in bloom. There was steam coming off the lakes when I started at 8 am. Canada geese were swimming on the water. The elevation gain is not difficult and views from the top are quite good. This was worth the drive from Dallas

Nice an isolated, but the trail rarely breaks through the trees to afford good views. The West side is tough to follow briefly. I went off the trail and just directed myself in the right general directiong using a GPS and the AllTrails app. It is easy bush-wacking and I eventually crossed over the real trail. I did not see anyone on the Horsethief trail, but there were several parties on the OT.

This is a 3 star trail that gets an extra star for being in the Metroplex. I walked it when it was "closed." However, it was passable with ankle-high boots. There were several very muddy sections and areas with ~5 inches or so of water. It gets remote enough to let civilization fall away, a major plus for me. The terrain is overall peaceful and pretty. I saw a number of animal tracks, but no land animals except squirrels. There were a variety of birds. There were no biting bugs on the February day I walked it, although it clearly will be their type of environment in a few months. There is an additional ~3 mile loop at the northeast extent of the trail that I did not walk. The real downside to the trail is the significant trash around it.

Joseph Frankl reviewed South Rim and Boundary Loop

I hiked this on a cloudy December day. It was secluded, quiet, and peaceful. There are some nice views from overlooks along the South Rim trail. Much of the rest of the scenery is somewhat monotonous. I encountered a few deer, birds of prey, and a family of hogs. Portions of the Boundary Loop are muddy and require hiking boots. Most of the elevation change is along the Boundary Loop. Trail marking is overall very good. The whole walk took around 4 hours.

It's a short gentle climb that is easy to combine with the longer Charon's Garden trail. The scenery along the mountain and at the top is nice. The views are ok at the top. There are areas where the trail is a bit difficult to follow because of criss-crossing side trails.
