Lots of traffic but a great view at the end you usually share with dozens of others

I'd hardly call it a hike--it's more like an amazing giant park. Went with my fam and another; five grown ups and 6 kids total and had the best time of the fall here in 2013. Oh did I mention it's amazing?

Easy elevation --- slippery in winter so be careful!! Went with the fam (5 kids) in January and slipped and slid to the caves!

Went last September to this interpretive trail with 3 kiddos while camping at Douglas Fir campground off of 542 Super easy, and absolutely gorgeous. Can't wait to get back

Fantastic views at little Bandera! this one kicked my 300lb butt! Nearly all the way. Ppl say that the beginning is relatively flat but I disagree. I know flat and that wasn't it.

Almost stopped at the first push up the rocks after the mason/bandera junction (which for me was pretty much a scramble:) but I came too far to quit. Bring plenty of water, or in my case water and Gatorade and pretzels. The salt was essential for me to finish without leg cramps.

amazing views throughout. The highway noise didn't bother me as it seemed to have others. I've had traffic noise on a trail and this was nothing.

Out of about 3 dozen in the area, this is my favorite thus far! Went solo. I was not prepared (I don't use a filter just tablets so I should have brought two bottles!) there are streams to fill up except after the last 2 miles or so. I stopped half a mile shy of the katwalk because my legs cramped and I wasn't gonna risk it on that last thin ridge that was packed with snow.:-(

Must be noted that I'm a near 300lb middle aged guy so anyone should be able to get through this one:-)

went with my 12yo son. started at 7:30, down at 12:30. we saunter.

my app clocked over 9miles from the parking lot, hmm...that said it wasn't terribly tough, though it is a steady climb until about the last mile, then it's all gravy.

won't rank as my favorite alpine lake (been to talapus, olalie, snow lake, with snow lake as my favorite), but the hike as a whole was filled with nice waterfalls, and cool scree fields.

it was worse for me (on the knees) on the way down.

good to do at least once!

Excellent first hike! Quick trip to good enough of a view. 10yo son & I took about a half hour to make it up.
