Joni Wu reviewed Borrego Canyon Trail to Red Rock Canyon

A nice beginner hike or trail run. Lots of shade for most of the trail, shared with mountain bikers. Red Rock Canyon trail is for hikers only. The Canyon isn’t very big but it’s pretty cool that it exists in the middle of a populated area. The trailhead is literally attached to a massive shopping center. It’s kinda crazy to walk back out and see such civilization immediately after being what feels like a world away.

Billy Goat is a fun trail considering it’s proximity for us that live nearby. There are steep inclines but it’s not overly strenuous if you exercise often. It’s not easy, though and a nice workout. The toll road and new homes is kind of an eyesore but the rolling hills make up for it. We did it with Red Rock which adds about 2 miles

Nice trail considering the convenience for those of us who live nearby. It’s nice when the wild flowers are blooming in spring/early summer, a bit dry and exposed in the summer sun. The hill is steep but the path is smooth and wide. I wouldn’t rate it as a difficult hike but it’s a good workout and most of it nice for trail running. There are a lot of mountain bikers that share the trail. I’d rather have a view of nature but the view of Irvine from the top of Dreaded Hill is nice.

Joni Wu reviewed Vernal and Nevada Falls via the Panorama Trail

I did it as a part of Half Dome last week, Mist Trail up, John Muir down. I wrote a blog piece about my experience called “A Non-Hikers Guide to Half Dome” which covers the Vernal/Nevada falls (and lots of pictures), along with how to prep. http://www.tofeelalive.com/2019/08/09/a-non-hikers-guide-to-half-dome/

I’m a beginner hiker and made it last week but it wasn’t easy. I wrote a piece for my blog called “A Non-Hiker’s Guide to Half Dome” which covers prep, the trail options, and my experience if anyone is thinking of doing it and want some detailed info from a newbie’s perspective: http://www.tofeelalive.com/2019/08/09/a-non-hikers-guide-to-half-dome/

Joni Wu reviewed Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias Trail

I did this yesterday and a little jaded in the review since I had just done Half Dome (via Mist Trail up/John Muir down) the day before and Sentinal Dome/Taft Point loop 2 days before and they were so much better. It was nice to have a little change of scenery with the giant sequoias but there were a few issues: 1) It’s really busy with tourists until you get further out 2) you have to take a shuttle from the main parking lot which all of just felt kitschy 3) the trail is easy to miss since there are different routes and service roads that are confusing so keep an eye on the All Trails GPS if you’re in a time crunch 4) the view from Wawona Point isn’t that spectacular in comparison to the others in the Valley.

I’ve only recently started hiking but I would think there are better ways to see the giant sequoias elsewhere with less people. But I still give it a 3 star since the trail is a good way to get away from the crowds near the shuttle area to see sequoias in Yosemite. I would maybe do this first before doing the ones in the valley. I had low hiking shoes but could’ve easily done it in trainers and certainly trail runners. A good amount of shade being a forest grove and all :)

Joni Wu reviewed Deep Creek Hot Springs to Bradford Ridge Path

I did this in January with friends who had done the research. Apparently there’s an easier route if you pay to park at the trailhead on private property. But we parked for free along the side of the road to an unmarked entrance for this route which is supposed to be more challenging. The first hour or so is pretty moderate with some flat parts and hills. The difficult part is going down towards the springs where there’s loose sand/rocks. I was in trainers so slipped a little so hiking shoes might have been better.

The springs itself is great with multiple pools and temps to relax in after the hike. There are naked people so be prepared to share a pool. The trail wasn’t busy but there were a good number of people at the springs as they may have come from the other trail. I don’t think I would want to do this in summer with the heat, mostly exposed trail, and then sitting in hot water but there are pools that are cooler and an ice melt pool with a rope swing that looked really fun (but water way too cold in January).

The way back was much easier going up the loose rock slopes. I ran most of the way back after that part.

Joni Wu reviewed Arrowhead Pinacles Trail

Did this 4th of July weekend and there were only a few other hikers. The wildflowers were still out which made it extra beautiful. The trail is fairly easy to follow/run until the ascend where we got lost going up some rocks and it was difficult to traverse. Nice people had set up rock stacks to follow to get us back on the trail. The scramble to the top was also challenging with multiple ways up/down. There was one part I had to wedge myself between two boulders and crab walk to get to the pinnacle. But it’s fun if you like that kind of stuff and the view is gorgeous.

There’s not much shade and it gets hot. We also encountered a medium sized snake on the path near the firing range route. It slithered up a tree pretty quickly but I wish I would’ve taken the regular route back.

Joni Wu reviewed Sentinel Dome and Taft Point Loop

Easy loop hike with some uphills. We did Taft first so we could get to sunset at Sentinal which was incredible. There were a decent amount of people but not too bad on a Thursday evening in peak summer season. You could do both peaks for 4 miles with backtracking but it’s a great 5 mile loop to see both sights without having to double back much. Plus, there are some great views on the backside on a peaceful forest trail.

Joni Wu reviewed Granite Lake & Maggie's Peaks

Snow still covering some of the trail which made it challenging to summit the peak. Use the AllTrails GPS to help guide you since we got lost a few times going off trail which made it more difficult. We were in trainers and didn’t have trekking poles so proper equipment would have made it easier, too. But the views at the top is worth the effort.
