Jon Rudolph reviewed Carter Lake Reservoir - Sundance Trail

Great hike near town. Very scenic. I went for the sunrise (see pic). Yes it's Rocky, so easy to moderate.

I started early at 5:45 am and didn't see anyone on the trail until around 9 am.

The sunrise facing east out the north end inlet was spectacular.

Did this hike on Saturday morning (8/4/18) with the intent to capture a sunrise. The trail and sun did not disappoint (see pics). The hike itself is easy, but the rocky trail could make it more of a moderate hike for some.

If going for a Sunrise I recommend dropping into the north end inlet and using the exposed rock cliff and shoreline as a natural contrasting boundary to focus and frame the sun.

Then enjoy the 6 mile round trip out & back hike with the "sun dancing" along your side.

Only negative is paying state park fees for the hike. But can't really complain as it helps maintain the parks.

Majestic hike among the old growth redwood. We did the hike yesterday, 3/29/18. Great intermediate hike for a few hours with great picture opportunities. However, both captures the sights, smell and feel. The visitors center is a great place to stop for trail advice based on your time, level and desitmred sights. Ranger/staff are very friendly and helpful.

If I could, this would be an annual pilgrimage to walk among the giants and recharge the soul.

Always a great snowshoeing trek in RMNP. Some fresh snow, occasional sun and on and off winds. Great variety to keep things interesting. Also makes for some different and interesting pictures.

Some people ventured without snowshoes, skis or crimpons. They didn't look like enjoyed the hike as much and a step off compacted trail was easily 2ft up the leg. So as always, the right gear makes for an easier more enjoyable trek.

A busy trail but knowing it and expecting makes it okay as people are generally friendly and accommodating on the trail. Not to say that sometimes it’s great to be on a trail and not see anyone.

Jon Rudolph reviewed Bear Lake to Bierstadt Lake via Flat Top Mountain Trail

Went up to Bear Lake with the plans to snowshoe the Bear Lake and Bierstadt Lake trails. Snow has been sparse so far this year and we were concerned that there would be minimal snow coverage and what the trail condition may be. The weather pulled through and we had a micro blizzard for our snowshoe hike. It was awesome.

Fresh snow if you're looking to head up snowshoeing soon. ENJOY!

Note: There were some ice patches on the road up through RMNP and some cars struggled.

Jon Rudolph reviewed B-17 Crash Site

We started our trek today from Twin Lakes. It was a bit of a challenge with stock 4x4. At one point my son had to guide me to ensure I had undercarriage clearance. Then at the Twin Lakes parking area the wind was so intense and strong it took your breath away and pushed you around. We decided to try the CSU Pingree Campus access, so hiked in from the Stormy Peaks trail head to the B-17 crash site.

Hiking at this time of year meant snow covered the second rock trail marker. We initially missed the small trail off the wider primary trail before the crash site (see map). The All Trails App was a great resource to 1) know we missed the side trail and 2) get back on trial. I love this app.

The hike was a good hike, but the crash site is what made this trek special. This was of course a humbling experience. It wasn’t just the crash debris, it was the thought of the airman, the era and technology and the crash location.

For local area hikes this is one to add to the list. I encourage people to take it in and then do some research on the crew and crash.

    Jon Rudolph reviewed Greyrock Trail

This was a very good local somewhat challenging hike with great views. The trails were somewhat overgrown, uneven, loose rock and some hand and foot climbing at Grey Rock. Just what a couple of 50+ year old men were looking for in a hike. We generally aren't looking for a city park path to hike.

It's worth noting that some of the trail at Grey Rock was hard to discern and some worn path areas can easily lead you off the path. However, you're not going to get lost and it's pretty straight forward to recognize and get back on trail.

The burnt-out trees and the quite flat inset at the summit area provided a unique eeriness, which added to the hike.

We only saw about 14 people, some with dogs. Not bad for a local hike and the 7.4 mile trek (Loop & summit).

The fact that the trail was built in 1910 was interesting and makes you think about the surveying, planning and constructing the trail at that time period. Something to appreciate.

Many people mentioned plenty of water. I would agree. The distance, dips, rises and overall ascent will drain you. Stay hydrated my friends.

I would highly recommend this local, somewhat challenging, hike.
