This trail is inside Horseshoe Bend National Military Park. Horseshoe Bend was the site of a famous battle in 1814 with General (and future president) Andrew Jackson vs Creek Indians. The Creeks lost and this battle is considered to be the one that signaled the beginning of the end for the Creeks in the U.S. It is a very historic site, and the trail runs around the battlefield area and museum. As previous reviewers have noted, it's pretty flat, more like a stroll through the woods. But it is on a very beautiful section of the Tallapoosa River and there is a lot to do at the park. See the helpful link to a link to the Park's website. If you are in the Lake Martin area and are looking for a trail experience more akin to the Appalachian Trail, I recommend hiking the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association's trails that are near Martin Dam, in Walnut Hill, AL, and Jacksons Gap, AL.

For nature lovers / birders, also the park is part of the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail -

This is a short trail to the top of Smith Mountain. The hiking is fun but the real payoff is being able to climb up Smith Mountain Tower. Smith Mountain Tower is a restored fire observation tower that was put into commission in 2012. The members of the Cherokee Alpine Trail Association made it happen along with donations from local Lake Martin area businesses and people. The trail to the tower is not very long but it does gain elevation quickly. Once you get to the top, be sure to conserve come energy to climb the steps to the top of the tower. If you go in warm weather, be sure to start in the cool of the day and stay hydrated. The views from the tower are breathtaking. At this writing, other trails around Smith Mountain are under construction, and this summer there will be several miles of trails ready to go, all serviced from this parking lot.
