John Scargill reviewed Sunfish Pond via Appalachian Trail

AllTrails has this hike at 5.8 but when we tracked it using AllTrails we came up with 7. This is a solid moderate to low end difficult and is a great trip thru nature. We came across some deer and lots of salamanders and toads. Our Jack Russell Piper enjoyed toying with the roads immensely. Some of the trail is overgrown but we opted for hiking pants so ticks were not an issue. We did douse ourselves in bug spray and that seemed to be a wise decision. It got crowded at Sunfish Pond but that’s to be expected as it really is quite beautiful.

Crushed gravel trail the whole way with partial sun partial shade. It is heavily traveled but everyone we met were polite. We started at Washington’s Crossing and went up to the Bulls run recreational center and crossed the foot bridge there into Pennsylvania. Always a beautiful ride! There are some parts of the towpath on the Pennsylvania side that are closed due to construction so we got kicked out onto the road for a little bit which was not necessarily bad as the gravel on the Pennsylvania side is not as groomed as the New Jersey side. We stopped at new Hope on the way back for lunch add that to your trip!

We hiked this in mid-May, for the most part we did well with the steep inclines but at the very top ice became an issue and we had fun sliding on our butts the way down for a little ways. Not all of the sliding was intentional. All Trails has this rated as hard and it is, several people brought their dogs which made for some entertainment. This Mike is not to be missed if you’re in Vermont.

We biked from the train station which added some fun. At the top of the falls we got off course and ended up shaving a mile off of our distance which we were disappointed in. But that doesn’t take away from how amazingly beautiful this hike is. Add it to your list!

Took my Jack Russell Piper out to hike there today. Lots of fun we had the place to ourselves, she wasn’t a big fan of meeting the horses but other than that we loved it. It’s got just enough inclines/declines to keep it interesting but manageable with my repaired knee. Will be taking all three dogs the next time!
