John Savedra reviewed Strawberry Peak via Colby Canyon

Has the potential to be very stressful with the poking Yucca plants, lack of shade, significant rock hopping, and scrambling up the West cliff face, Also amazing how you can get turned around, although not lost, and put in a precarious situation so quickly at various point on the trail.

Solutions to the stress are, minimum 3.0 l of water. Wear denim, or mountain pants for Yucca Armor . Keep three points of contact as you travel up rough terrain. Have at least one trekking pole. Use GPS as a hiking guide. Dogs should absolutely wear boots. Keep an eye out for rattlers, although I saw none myself.

I started at 630 am in July, wish I would of started earlier, as the sun can beat down pretty hard on most of the trail.

A very unique trail, fun , w appropriate preparation.

The trail is indeed 6.5 miles, round trip , if you begin where one should a couple/ few miles past Guffy. The trail is basically a straight line up the mountain. There are only a few soft shoulder turnouts to park in where the truck trail meets the Pine Mtn trail, so first come first serve. If you do start at Guffy, you are in for a much longer haul as you will be traveling on PCT which traces the Blue Ridge Truck trail. Lots of scree. Trekking poles help. I saw only one other person when I went the day after Memorial Day. Mildly strenuous but fun in dry months. In winter I imagine it would get pretty sketchy at places. Dogs def need to be sure footed, as a previous reviewer mentioned.

A mildly strenuous trail when hiked snow-free and in the early morning . Stunning Forrest trail w lots of shade. Peak is exposed though. Heavy foot-traffic but all were kindred spirits, naturally. There is a bench half way up to rest up on. Very enjoyable!

6-5-17 Pretty fantastic, and varied as far as scenery. We went up as far Gem, and there was a harry water crossing and some snow shelves that had to be crossed as well. I happened to have an ice axe, which helped as I had a dog on leash. A perfect moderate hike.

Early June 2017. Trail finding was very difficult with the snow. Have a handy electric trail guide w extra power to find your way. Could of used crampons, but a gortex boot was fine. Crystal is lake mostly frozen over now. Trail is short but a lot of work with its steep snowy incline.
