Make sure you are in good shape before attempting this hike especially if you have some age on you. it's not the going down but the coming back up that will make you wonder "what in the hell was I thinking". expect to spend at least 5 hours on this hike but it is very rewarding when you complete it. great views getting there along the overlooks on top of the parkway.

Bottom Creek is a good solitary hike. I've hiked this trail several times and each time find myself in a soul-searching sort of mood. this hike is good to help you work through any issues in your life. Very tranquil.

John Mikels reviewed Carvin's Cove Hay Rock via Appalachian Trail

I see in the reviews about my being my "new favorite hike". Well I see why now, as this is a moderate hike with great views once you get to the ridge. I love going to triple crown hikes close by but can be way to crowed at times. we hit Hay Rock about 9ish and didn't see a soul until starting back down. hay Rock itself is somewhat intimidating to climb, but after my son went up the steep side i saw that the other side was a easier to climb. oh, did I mention this is my new favorite hike now. [(;-)

Buffalo Mtn. Is approx. a 1 mile hike from the parking lot. It's a little hard to find the first time but well worth the effort. It has an elevation gain of close to 600 ft. in that mile but is switched-backed so as not to be too strenuous. At the top there is an almost 360 degree view and looking southward you can see Pilot Mtn. NC. on most days. With a good set of binoculars the skyline of Winston Salem can just be made out a little distance to the East of Pilot Mtn. (look at the base of the sloping mountain range). Be aware that the wind blows often at the top so take a sweater just in case.

Love Dragon's Tooth. it's a moderate hike and I have a little depression on top of the tooth that fits like a recliner. usually eat here while soaking up the views.
