John Giusto reviewed South Piedra Lisa Trail

The east part of the Rincon Spur Trail ends at the Knife Edge of the Shield (furthest waypoint on recording). This is 0.8 miles from the south Piedra Lisa Trail junction. You can hike and scramble with minimal climbing for about 2/10 of a mile up the Knife Edge to about 9000 ft elevation. After that you would be free climbing. Unmatched views, serious wind and a plenty steep enough trail await.

John Giusto reviewed Agua Sarca Trail

If you zoom in on the Agua Sarca map you can see and follow the full route to the intersection with the North Crest Trail. (Note: at the early Y in the trail you want to go left and at the stone fireplace you want to go to the right.) From the parking lot this is about 3 miles one way. You can then make a loop taking the North Crest Trail back (6.7 miles) or use the Ojo del Orno shortcut (zoom in, it’s the unnamed path straight back to the parking lot that cuts off the big curve in the North Crest Trail). Ojo del Orno is 0.8 miles long and takes you down 1000 ft over some loose rock but it cuts off 2.5 miles. Of course you could do the hike in the other direction. A much longer loop hike would be to continue on the North Crest Trail after Agua Sarca to the Ellis Trail to Osha Loop to Penasco Blanco back to the North Crest Trail (0.7 miles into the return loop above). This loop with Ojo del Orno seems to be at least 11 miles and goes from 6350 ft to almost 9800 ft. Yeah, it’s the one I did. Nice hike with plenty of high country meadow and forest and you go through Osha Spring.

John Giusto reviewed Chimney Canyon Trail

Parked at the Crest House and hiked the Crest Spur to the La Luz trail down and Chimney Canyon back up. Would not want to hike down the upper part of Chimney Canyon but going up is a great workout, even if you stow the poles and use all fours for awhile. The super-steep part (+/- 100% grade) ends in a grove of aspen and a field of wildflowers (May 26) below the radio and TV towers. Note: those towers and the canyon I imagine made my GPS a bit off. The intersection with La Luz was hundreds of feet downtrail from where the GPS and AllTrails map said it was. The trail is actually a trail most of the time so if you’re making your own deer trails or the Ap says to go through the dense forest or up a cliff, reassess. The views and overall Zen of this hike rate the full 5 stars. Chimney Canyon is mostly through forest. See the Chimney Canyon pictures.

    John Giusto reviewed Pino Trail

Be sure to find the lunch spot rocks at the end of the trail. You take a right on the Crest Trail and at the sign for the Cienega Trail (visible from the Pino Trail sign) just head right up the rocks then left on a small trail which provides access to a long shelf of rocks directly over the last section of the Pino Trail. I put this on the recording but it’s easy to find.
