Joey P reviewed Musch Trail to Eagle Rock

It’s a nice trail with some hard-to-find cover along the way. There are great views at Eagle Rock and more trails to extend your hike. However, California’s drought has left so many of these trails dry and burnt. It is depressing to witness and should cause us all to give pause when driving our SUVs to these trailheads.

My wife and I really enjoyed this trail. It’s pretty easy and includes some beautiful views of the forest. No really good views of the mountains, however, so pick another if that’s what you’re after.

We did this trail last week. It was extremely icy around some of the stone steps. We saw several people just sitting on the side of the trail contemplating going on. I won’t give this trail more than a 3 star rating, however, because the last quarter mile is closed off due to forest fires from last year. The lookout point was crowded with people and not exceptional. I would love to go when the chimney tops portion is reopened.

A healthy doe manifests 15 feet ahead of us and we, so typical of city dwellers, see a large dog at first, slowly recognizing our mistake and marveling in the beauty of this creature. "How can people shoot these?" I quietly wonder. The wind moves slowly through us as the doe recedes into the deep brush, disappearing behind a blanket of tall prairie grass and shrubs. The white of her tail reflecting the dim light from the overcast is all we can see as she moves on. We were a passing curiosity at best; yet our reaction lacks such triviality: We wonder where she is going and hope she has learned to stay off of the highway droning not far from where we stand. We stand still as the overcast breaks for a moment, revealing a solitary ray of light, and we see her white tail once more. And then she's gone.
