Awesome trail... I stumbled on it as an option to do some hiking while I was on a motorcycle trip. Great views, moderate elevation gain, and overall peace and quiet. It is a very special trail. I never saw a mountain biker on the trail in the 2 times I've been on this in the last 2 months. Just nice hikers out for a day trip.

There isn't much access to water up on the ridge, especially once you are on the crest, so plan accordingly. If you are going to camp and want access to water you will need to look at one of the lower areas off the top with water near by.

An OK trail. Not a bad hike, but you are surrounded by beetle kill the entire way. Surprise Lake itself is virtually uncampable unless you are comfortable camping under a cathedral of dead trees.

This trail seems more like a segment of the Payne Creek Trail as it crosses the Craig Meadows. This was a good hike overall. I took the CO Trail Segment 4 to The Payne Creek Trail down into the meadows.

I took the Payne Creek Trail from the CO Trail segment 4 down to Craig Meadows. This was a good hike, I took the trail to the west end of the meadows (I was coming from the east), and then backtracked to where the campsites are on the east side of the meadows.

The trail east of the meadows is nice, a little up and down, some considerable vert in a short distance, but nothing too bad. Some nice creek crossings.

I camped at the confluence of the Craig Creek, and the Bluestem Draw. There are some nice pine forest campsites, and some down in the meadow. With the best one in the meadow being just after you cross the Craig Creek coming from the east. On my track I marked all 4 campsites I found on the hike.

Good trail, as others said, there is lots of nice shade. Its also close to Denver which makes it easy to get to. A few things to note. Once you get to the actual Beaver Brook on the Chavez Trail (the first bridge) the trail does get a bit confusing. There are roughly 5 or 6 river crossings, only one of which is a little iffy (skipping across rocks about 4" under the rushing river). the rest you just walk over logs and such that are placed around. There is a rock outcropping you need to scramble over at one point as well, the trail continues behind it.

The trail is fun, while it has some technical bits. Besides fro the river crossing, there are many places with some exposure, with some very steep inclines and declines in areas. Just be ready to keep your balance. Trekking poles work wonders in those areas and the river crossings.

There is parking at the actual trailhead where the trails fork off. There is also parking .25mi up the road, where I parked. It works fine but does cause you to need to hike up hill another little bit. Just drive down the road to the trailhead.
