Interesting, level walk to see the geothermal area.

This was one of the more heavily trafficked hikes I did in June, but very pleasant with little benches along the way to enjoy the views or have a picnic. The path is a steady incline and pretty steep especially early on. The final approach was closed due to weather conditions but could still get a clear view at the end of the open part. Many families on the trail; one of the more kid-friendly hikes I was on in Iceland.

Nice, easy hike along the coast. As other reviewers mentioned, it starts out as boardwalk on the Hell at side and I think I recall it turning to pavement on the Arnarstapi side, but in the middle the path is a little more rocky since you’re going through a lava field. There are lots of cliffs and lovely views. There were quite a few hikers on this trail so don’t expect total isolation here. I had a lot of fun on this trail and would definitely recommend. If you don’t have time or energy for the full out and back walk, do it one-way and have a travel buddy drive.

Extremely hot in mid September, and no shade in some places. Get there early to find parking, was full by 9am when I went. Being down in the amphitheater was amazing though, and worth the heat and crowds. You can extend your hike with several options inside the amphitheater. The ranger recommended clockwise before 11am and counterclockwise after in order to catch the best lighting.

Hiked this in June. The views were lovely, the weather was not too hot, and the hot spring river was a delight and not too crowded early in the morning. The steepest parts were in the first half and after that it was fairly level. There are horse tours on this trail so watch your step and do stay out of the way since they do come plowing through and can catch your at a bad place coming around a sharp bend/blind spot.

Very nice multi lake hike with decent coverage on the trail. Having said that, it got very hot on the way back so stay hydrated. There are a couple relatively steep inclines coming up to Nymph lake and then again at Emerald, but not too difficult—although it is at high altitude, and I did see the rangers helping a couple of people with either altitude sickness (or possibly heat stroke). Trail is very well maintained and was also very crowded during August. I arrived around 6:30am and went to see Bear Lake before setting off, and parking lot was full when I passed by at 7ish. While not my favorite on RMNP, it is a beautiful trail and absolutely worth doing if you have the time!

JoAnn L reviewed Bear Lake to Sky Pond via Glacier Gorge Trail

Gorgeous hike, and a lot to see along the way. I did this hike on Labor Day weekend, so there was a lot of traffic. When I was leaving around 11, there were tons of people especially on the first segment heading to Alberta Falls. Make sure you get there early; I couldn’t get parking at Glacier Gorge at 6, so I started from Bear Lake parking (half full), adding about a mile to the total round trip distance. Im not sure about the distance listed, since I clocked closer to 10mi. The altitude definitely made this hike strenuous for me since I just arrived from sea level. The scramble up Timberline was a bit crowded but a lot of fun, especially when a curious marmot crossed my path on the way down. I don’t think I would have enjoyed that bit in the rain or if there was any snow/ice. The entire hike is beautiful and it is definitely my favorite trail in RMNP.

JoAnn L reviewed Ute Trail from Poudre Lake to Alpine Ridge

I did the hike one-way downhill from the visitor center to Milner pass at the end of August. In that direction it was a very easy hike with little elevation change until the very end nearing the lake; I expect this would be quite steep on the way up from the lake but it will level off quickly. The section near the visitor center is open field and completely uncovered, so I wouldn’t recommend doing this trail if it looks like thunderstorms, and do try to get an early start because the sun is really intense in this section. The rest of the hike goes into the trees and has good coverage. This hike is really nice for those who like wildflowers and wooded trail. I didn’t see any wildlife apart from a ton of butterflies and some birds, and the ranger I spoke to said there are better options if wildlife is your main interest.
