James Kipp reviewed Guadalupe Peak Texas Highpoint Trail

Terrific hike. 3 hours up, 2:15 down, plus time at the top. First third of the hike is the steepest. Last third and the peak were very windy - 40-50 mph gusts that day according to the folks at the visitor's center - so a fleece and windbreaker are highly advisable. Still, I wish I had been in shorts rather than long pants. On the advice of the visitor's center I had 3L of water, but 2L would have been plenty. Saw a number of hikers carrying only 1L, though that would be too little in my view. Depends on the temps, of course. The day I hiked it was about 50 degrees at the TH at 9 am. Bring sunscreen.

Best moderate trail in Big Bend National Park. Great views from the top. Limited parking at TH. In peak season, lot fills up early (an hour after sunrise). We did the hike on 3/24/18.

Terrific day hike. Spectacular views from the top. Plan on 7 hours r/t. Bring at least 2L of water per person. Expect a bit of bouldering at the very top, which is quite doable but not for everyone. Gloves not necessary, but I was glad I brought a pair to protect my hands from scratches. Even if you don’t do the bouldering the hike is still well worth it. There are a number of primitive campsites sites sites along the trail for those interested in making it an overnight trip. We did the hike 3/25/18.

Fabulous hike. Among the best hikes we've done. Ice Lake IS beautiful, but the there are impressive waterfalls and views along the trail as well. Took us 5 hours (excluding time hanging out at Ice Lake) and that included the extra mile past Ice Lake to Fuller Lake. We did not do Island Lake. The hike is rated Hard, but I would say Moderate.

A great hike. My first 14er. Did the hike on Friday, July 7. Arrived just before sunrise. Main parking lot was about half full. There are toilets at the parking lot. The hike starts out across a marshy area. (The trail has wood walkways in places as needed.) Imagine our delight to see a moose bathing in the pond near the trail! Took us 6 hours to complete the hike, including about 20 minutes at the peak. I'm 57, in good but not great shape and live in Dallas (500 ft elevation).

Nice hike. Tree-lined all the way, so views are limited. On the trail at 7 a.m. and finished at 2:30. Felt longer than 11.3 mi. (8/25/16)

Terrific day hike. Strenuous but not difficult. Nice views once you're above the tree line, especially at Wheeler Peak.

Camped at the trailhead. Hit the trail at sunrise (6:30), reached Wheeler Peak at 11:00 and was back at the trailhead by 2:30. Glad I got an early start. Clouded up at noon and a light rain began around 1:00. But there was also lightning in the area and above the tree line there's no place to shelter. I'm a low-lander (Dallas), but in reasonably good shape (56; bike 40 miles a week). The altitude caught up with me; had to greatly slow my pace and take deeper breaths for the last 2-or-so miles up. Did not see another soul on the trail. Scads of marmots near the peak, including one perched on the top of the rock pile marking Wheeler Peak! (Photo.) No snow or ice on the trail (8/31/16).
