    Jill Gillette reviewed Floodwood Loop

Hiked June 14, 2018. Spent a drizzly day walking this trail from Fish Creek State Park. We started near site C5 bathroom and went on the blue trail to Floodwood Road past all the ponds first. Then walked down the road to return on the red trail. Red trail is less scenic but we did find some moose tracks near a newly built bridge. Definitely recommend the blue trail first do you can enjoy the ponds and multiple canoe carries before you are tired. Previous writer correct in terms of some bushwhack and bridge out on blue trail. Red trail had all bridges in tact with little need to go off trail. Also, the All Trails App takes a detour on the blue trail that we did not find that cuts out going on the shores of Horseshoe Pond. The actual blue trail markings take you along the shores of Horseshoe Pond. If you follow the blue trail markers it will bring you to the right place. It took us 4.5 hours to follow the actual Trail and adventure onto most if the canoe carries as well as search for moose. It could take a bit less time without sight seeing. It is 7.7 miles to 8.7 miles (longer to scout the canoe carries) from the Fish Creek Trailhead. Worth reading about in Discover the Northern Adirondacks Trail Guide. Take a map so you can name the ponds. Enjoy.

Jill Gillette reviewed McKenzie Mountain Jack Rabbit Trail

Climbed this June12, 2018 with my husband. Trailhead was actually on the left not the right for Jackrabbit Trail. Parking is roadside. I have climbed all but 4, 46 high peaks and I can say this mountain had outstanding views comparatively and was as challenging as a few of the 46. This is a GREAT hike. I would do it again for the views. I like that you have time to warm up before the steep part but then get a break again before the summit. Lots and lots of false summits and herds paths. Needed my map and compass at times on the way up as the trail was not marked well in spots. Marked better with orange blazes on the way down. Trust the app, it definitely gets you there. Enjoy and please remember to be respectful of the private land so we can continue to enjoy this hike. We only met 1 couple on their way up when we were almost back. If you are looking for some quiet this is a good pick. I am a slow hiker. It took us 6 hours start to finish with a 1 hour lunch break at the top.

I am used to hiking the NY Adirondack mountains. This was not as challenging but nice start to my hiking year. Nice views. We opted to help me up the gravel road and down the white blaze trail back. I would do this route again to avoid the pounding pavement on my knees on the way down or I would go up and down the same path through the white blazes. Great hike for dogs as not alot of challenging obstacles. Would be a great hike for younger kids as well.

Jill Gillette reviewed Mount Marshall via the Calamity Brook Trail

I gave this 4 stars even though I do not want to hike again because the hike to Marshall is beautiful. I have no desire to summit again as there is no view. We hiked this as part of a Labor Day backpacking trip. Hiked in 6 miles Friday night to the Allen Marcy junction then hiked Saturday to Allen and Sunday to Marshall. Marshall hike passed Hanging Spears Falls which was incredibly beautiful. Flowed Lands amazing. Difficult climb for us as it was rainy and cold thanks to the Hurricane Harvey aftermath. Overall not a difficult climb comparably. This was 42/46 Peaks hiked for me and definitely not near the toughest just long. I would definitely return to the first part to Hanging Spears Falls and Flowed Lands. If you are not seeking 46er status I would skip the summit and just hike to these two spots.

Allen was tough only because it is a long hike. Many miles of mostly flat and then you gain all the elevation in last 2-3 miles. I did not think this was as tough as many other High Peaks, though, in terms of actual difficulty climbing. We hiked this as a backpack trip. Hiked in roughly 6 miles from Upper Works to Allen Trailhead. Stayed at the junction to Allen and Marcy and set up tents on an old truck road. We hiked Allen Saturday then Marshall Sunday through Flowed Lands then hiked out Monday. All in all, a good hike. This was 41/46 Peaks hiked for me. Recommend as backpacking trip versus day trip if you are a slower hiker or want to enjoy the hike without worrying about time. Nice views along the hike including a waterfall. Views at the top past the wooded summit.

Amazing hike. I think for a more experienced hiker due to the cliffs. Views are incredible. Round Trip took 3.5 hours and I am a slower hiker. Lots of stops for views.

I agree with the other review....not very exciting but different place to walk. I would not travel far to hike this but if in the area a different place to walk and quiet. Some ATV riders but very respectful of me walking with my 2 dogs. Some parts of trail flooded. Lots of deer flies. I did not find the ponds on this trip but plan to return. Lots of butterflies.
