The scenery is just amazing. Definitely bring water and a camera. Many parts of the trail are pretty muddy, however, so be sure to dress appropriately (or bring extra towels for the dogs). Several amazing spots to stop and enjoy the scenery! Easily my favorite trail to hike with the dogs. If you bring dogs, just be aware that the past few times we've visited there has been NO trash can to dispose of poop bags, either in the parking lot or along any part of the path!! VERY VERY BUSY ON WEEKENDS, parking may be difficult!! If you're planning on going on the weekend, be sure to come early!

Definitely challenging with elevation gains. We ended up veering off Lime Kiln to take Trail Among The Trees and then to Rock Quarry and back again. Both are pretty scenic, though Lime Kiln is more challenging. Would visit again. Lots of downed and dead trees in some spots, with just a few parts of the trail blocked by such (but still navigable). Part of a bridge is out on Trail Among the Trees so there is a detour around it, though we ended up going that way anyway and climbing up the side. We went on a week day and there was little to no other hikers there.

Gorgeous trail, would easily be one of my favorites if it weren't for the high amount of foot traffic. If you're considering visiting Castlewood, go early during the week. This place is PACKED on weekends! Very scenic, dog-friendly (but PLEASE pick up after your dog and keep it on-leash). Can be muddy in spots. Lots of little off-shoots to explore for scenery. I did this loop and River Scene Trail together for a nice hike. This one has a pretty steep incline at "the stairs" if you aren't entering from the west end, so be prepared. The stairs are VERY narrow and can be difficult to pass others, especially with dogs. When I went a few months ago, some of the slats on the steps were missing and my dog fell through. They seemed to have been fixed the last time I went though, just be cautious.

I prefer the Lewis & Clark trails (near Defiance, MO) only because it is far less trafficked on weekends.
