Jennifer Nelson reviewed North Mount Franklin Trail

Steep and rocky hike but worth the views. I wouldn’t recommend in the summer since there’s no shade. Definitely worth it, the highest point in El Paso. Lots of cholla cacti near the peak.

    Short, easy hike.

I’ve hiked to Ranger Peak from both sides of the mountain. There’s a fair amount of rock scrambling on this side. Both sides are steep and rocky, watch your footing. Not much shade, but views are worth it!

Short easy trail. We did it combining Montezuma Quail loop. Very well marked, but rocky. Good views.

Great views and not difficult. Rocky in some places. Would be nice in the spring or fall but hot in the summer; not much shade. Trail is well marked.

Did this as a loop with the Skyline trail. Great views and not difficult. Rocky in some places. Would be nice in the spring or fall but hot in the summer; not much shade.

Worth doing this trail at least once. There isn’t any shade, so I recommend doing it from November through March. No real trail to follow. Lots of loose rock and cacti with some scrambling involved. Once you get near the site, there’s debris scattered in various places and a memorial plate on the side of a huge rock.

Not my favorite hike in El Paso. This trail is challenging and there’s a lot of loose rock; watch your footing. I’m not one for hiking poles or sticks but they would be useful on this trail. Neat bench and sign in book at the peak.

Not my favorite hike in El Paso. This trail is challenging and not well marked. As you get to the stone building the trail is steep and there’s a lot of loose rock; watch your footing. We continued onto Ranger Peak Loop. I’m not one for hiking poles or sticks but they would be useful on this trail. The views are excellent!

Long dirt road off Highway 89 that leads you to a parking area. Decided to drive our 4WD vehicle up to Paw Hole. There were a few times I thought we might get stuck. We made it to Paw Hole and explored for a few hours. The area is super sandy and there's not much shade. Worth seeing once but not sure I'd do it again.

Short and easy hike mostly in the sun, bring some water. Worth doing if you are in the area.

Short hike, easy to the arch and then it gets slightly more difficult. There's not a lot of shade on the trail. Views were awesome! This is a neat state park.

Not much of a hike, there's a paved path to the arch and some dirt trails you can walk around to explore. The arch was fantastic but I didn't care for the drive. We drove a 4 wheel drive truck but saw people driving down the bumpy dirt road with RV rentals.

Not much of a hike. The road leading there is quite bumpy at times. We had the place to ourselves. The rock formations were neat to see. There's picnic areas but they aren't in the shade. Can get quite hot in the summer.

Overall this was an easy trail, the sand and sun make it tough. I had to dump out all the sand in my shoes and socks at the waterfall and again at the parking lot. I would not recommend bringing a stroller, we saw a family that did and had to leave it behind for part of the trail. The waterfall at the end was gorgeous! The parking lot is small and fills up quick.
