Jenn Christenson reviewed Elk Mountain to King's Mountain Loop

Just did the loop today. HOT. Did it in 6 hour with a 1.6 mile detour down elk mountain trail bc I read the sign wrong. Brought lots of layers didn’t need a single one. Started at Kings trailhead and went counter clockwise hitting elk mountain first. Elk mountain ascent is way more steep and technical than Kings, but the descent down Kings is pretty punishing at the end on weary legs. Not too much exposure but bring sun screen. A few tricky areas that require scrambling throughout and one area between elk and kings summit where you need a rope. I wore bug spray. Tons of flies and bees. I can still hear them buzzing in my ears. Bring more water than you think you need, especially if it’s hot. Great work out. Beautiful views.

Took the dog mountain shuttle from Skamania Fairgrounds parking lot on Rock Creek Drive. I got the first shuttle out at 730 am. Ride to the trailhead was about 15 min. When u pay your $2 for the shuttle your wristband serves as a hiking permit. When we got there there were several park rangers strictly enforcing the new permit rules. Many were turned away.
I took the “more difficult” segment of dog mountain trail up and Augsberger trail down. Took me 3.5 hrs. I had solitude most of the time with the exception of the top.
Great views of Hood and St. Helens. There were some small yellow flowers up at the top and the lower trees were just starting to bloom. Will have to come back when the wildflowers are in full swing. Beautiful moss laden Forest for most of the hike.

Crowded parking lot if you get here late. Very steep especially at the top, wishing I had trekking poles for the way down. Only minimal frost on the trail towards the top today. A real leg buster but well worth it for the views of the ocean and Mt Hood.

Jenn Christenson reviewed Coldwater Lake Trail

Tried to do Harry’s Ridge but the access road was closed right after the trailhead to Coldwater Lake. It was a nice enough hike on a clear blue sky day. Views of the lake and some surrounding mountains somewhat monotonous but still very beautiful and peaceful. Not many out on the trail at all on a Sunday.
