Hiked this on 15Nov16 on a beautiful sunny day. Along the way you have some great views, and at the lake the view is spectacular. The trail is generally easy to follow, although when you reach the boulder field surrounding the lake it's not obvious where it goes. Take a little side trip to see Dream Lake, where you have a great view of Hallett Peak and the Tyndall Glacier rising above the lake.

A great hike with lots of rocks and great views. The arch itself is spectacular. The last 3/4 - 1/2mi is quite steep and rocky, justifying the "Hard" category for this hike. We turned this into a 4mi hike by taking the Flatiron Loop trail on the way back, which also increased the elevation gain to ca. 2,000ft. We were there on a July weekday morning and the parking lot was nearly full by 8:40am.

This is a short, fun hike that takes you through varied terrain of bristlecone pines, wildflowers and rocks. It has great views of Chief Mtn & the foothills to the east and Mt Evans to the west. You get treated to great views of the Mt Evans area when you cross the high point of the hike at an elevation of about 12,200 ft. On a Monday morning in July at about 9:10am, parking at the lower trailhead was not a problem. By 11am, the parking area was crowded but people seem to come an go.

We made this into a 4.5mi loop hike by going up Black Bear and crossing over to Horseshoe for the way down (see uploaded track). On a weekday morning in July we were the only car at the Black Bear TH parking lot and we were the only ones on that trail. We did see other people on the way down on Horseshoe. So, this is definitely a quiet trail with lots of challenging rock scrambles and a good vertical climb with some steep parts. The way down on Horseshoe is just a gradual downhill hike. Good views from the top of Black Bear as you pass through Aspen groves and pine trees.
