Amazing track — super easy on the main walk and then the trail gets rugged once you go on the caves loop but not hard, you just have to watch your footing in the caves and the trail. VERY muddy when we went, it was raining the whole time but we had a great time. Amazing glow worms and GOLD in miners cave. Wildly crazy beautiful, one of my favorite hikes I’ve ever done !! So nice and very isolated

Well, it ain’t easy, but it’s soooo worth it. The hike isn’t technical by any stretch of the imagination — you’re just walking up a 4x4 track. BUT, it’s long and a pretty considerable elevation gain, so it’s a workout getting to the top. Definitely worth it on a clear day! Beautiful views of the kaikoura mountain range and kaikoura itself — also great views of the ocean !! Bring lots of layers because it’s quite chilly on top, but you definitely break a sweat on the way up. There’s water at the hut (which is about 2/3 of the way up) which says needs boiling but it was fine when I drank it. The hut itself is pretty decent compared to some NZ huts. Generally a nice hike if you wanna see kaikoura but don’t wanna see people!!

A lot of construction on the ski fields, but once you turn off it’s nice and secluded. Lake Alta is beautiful even in gross fog and rain. Nice place to do some random rock scrambling. Easy hike too. The road is to get up is super sketch though, well paved but extremely windy and steep. Still worth the views!!

Honestly the hike sucked, it was just an uphill grind the whole time with zero breaks, and overall pretty boring while walking. We started at 4 AM to catch the sunrise — so glad we did! Got up to the top in 3 hours and we are in moderate fitness, there were less than 20 people at the peak but we saw so many more on the way down. Views at the peak are SPECTACULAR. we got extremely lucky with the weather, clear day, but the wind at the top was horribly cold. Couldn’t really bear it, but we watched the sun rise at the top and it was gorgeous — saw perfect views of mt. Aspiring, the surrounding snow capped peaks, and Lake Wanaka. It was chilly at the bottom when we started but pretty warm when we ended, but I was in 4 layers at the peak. Definitely worth the effort, but I would HIGHLY recommend the sunrise hike to avoid the crowds and the sunrise is gorgeous over the mountains. A lot of people started up the hike that I knew wouldn’t last — sorry hun, but your designer boots and jeggings aren’t a good idea, regardless of how cute you want your famous Instagram shot to be.

Definitely a must do when in the north island, but only if you have some amount of hiking experience!! It’s LONG, a very tiring day that will leave your feet sore at the last few kilometres, but super worth it. I experienced all weather conditions, and wore everything from a down coat to a windbreaker to a fleece and a T-shirt with a base layer. Strongly recommend a good pair of hiking boots. We finished in 6.5 hours with a long (~1 hour) break for lunch at the emerald pools. Make sure the weather is good before going up because the red crater ridge was scary because of the crazy wind!! Overall, an amazing hike with unparalleled views, and generally not the hardest hike I’ve ever done...not easy, the ascents are steep, but they don’t last long. 2 L of water was perfect, as well as lunch and one bag of peanuts. Definitely would do it again.

Such a nice day hike! I would agree with other users in that it is more on the upper side of moderate rather than hard. It took us 2 hours and 40 on the actual track, not including lunch. We went another 2-3 km on the Roberts Ridge route, which I would definitely recommend! That gave us some extra views with a cool walk along the ridge. It can get really windy on that part though!! Definitely would suggest the pinchgut track first, the ascent through switchbacks was tough but not extreme, and it’s pretty quick. We got up to the top in an hour and a half and we are in moderate fitness. We got really lucky with the weather for late April, about 23 degrees with a full sun. It made for a great day with a nice hour and 10 min decline from the ridge track cutoff (we were really quick at that point though lol). 10/10 would recommend for some good lake and ridge views !!!!

Super easy quick walk, pretty busy though compared to most of the tracks I’ve done in NZ. pools are really pretty though! Worth the drive, that in itself is pretty. Try jumping off the bridge into the water!! Refreshing, to say the least

Super great track!! We got a perfect day, sunny and 17 degrees C in mid April. Trail was moderately busy but everyone we saw was in good spirits. Generally a pretty decently easy track but the first half of the way in can get you a little tired, but definitely one of the easier hikes I have done in NZ. absolutely breathtaking views at the beginning and end of the trail, the glacier was amazing! The cows at the car park and beginning of the trail were super cute as well. Disappointed we didn’t see any kea but still a 10/10 hike!!!

Honestly pretty brutal. Was not used to this kind of humid, wet, nasty heat, when we did this in July. Getting out of Waipio valley was just these ruthless switchbacks and it was pretty overgrown and lots of bugs. The valley itself was nice to camp in, but a lot of people on our trip got really sick in the middle of it which really didn’t help our cause. Overall a really hard hike if you aren’t prepared, as some hikers weren’t. If you’ve hiked before and are in good fitness, definitely worth checking out and camping in the valley!!

One of my first backpacking trips, did with my extremely fit boyfriend, and it was a pretty strenuous trip, but it was mainly because of our surprising deficit of water and the ruthless heat. We brought about 8 L of water for 2 people for 2 days, and we had to conserve, and the heat was insane, as we went in the middle of May (from Indiana, we aren’t used to that heat with such little shade). Overall, I definitely could see the hike done in 1 long day, but with the weight that we brought combined with a later start time, as well as the extra ~4 mile loop on the top of the mountain made for a full, yet doable backpacking trip. The top of Emory peak was gorgeous, and allowed for some cell service, but the extra loop off the main loop gave us more isolation and equally gorgeous views of the desert below. Definitely make sure to bring more water than you think you need if doing this in the summer, because while it was absolutely gorgeous and moderately strenuous, the last thing you want to happen is run out of water on a hot summer day in the desert. Overall, an amazing hike for either a long day hike or short trail times for a 2 day backpacking trip. I was honestly surprised at how lovely the desert views could be!
