We chose this trail as our first REAL backpacking trail. Looked relatively easy in the book. 2,800 feet of elevation over 6.3 miles. Packs were between 40-50 pounds (too heavy we realize now). The hike in is pleasant and the trail is in good shape and marked well. We did a loop of Trapper Creek Trail 192 to Observation Trail 132 (13+ miles total). It's an uphill grind most of the way, there are some breaks when you go downhill just to head right back up again. This seemed very difficult due to the pack weight. It was slow going and after about 6.5 hours we were all pretty dead and made camp for the night only about 5.5 miles in. There are plenty of opportunities to refill water along the way (filter it). This trail is difficult but a very good workout. I think next time I might try to do it with a day pack and see if it's easier.

This is quite a hike. I was expecting it to be strenuous and I wasn't dissapointed. Most of the trail info I can find say this is between a 6 and 6.5 mile hike. At the trailhead it indicates that it's 3.8 miles to the summit thus a 7.6 mile loop. I ended up going the scenic route both up and down. I started at the trailhead at 9am and only saw a total of 9 people (and 2 dogs) on the way up. Took 2.5 hours to summit with a considerable number of time stopping to catch my breath. The weather was questionable at the beginning but sunny skies prevailed. The meadow and the views at the top were excellent. Ran into significantly more people on the decent after lingering at the top for 30 minutes. The decent was as you expect steep. I found it less rough on the knees to actually jog down rather than try and slow my decent (thus the 1.5 hour decent). I ran into friendly people and pets on the way down (all asking how far the top was). Overall I think this is an excellent hike and a good primer for my St Helens climb in August. I think I'll do it again before then.

So this was a pretty good hike, we started not from the parking lot but from a logging road with a trail that meets the main trail about halfway from the parking lot to the summit. This added roughly 1.5 miles in distance and about 500' more elevation. The weather was socked in so we didn't really get any good views until the trip back down when mother nature decided to relent. For the last milt there is still a bunch of snow (anywhere from 6" to 2' I'd guess. The trail wasn't very busy, but the folks on it were nice enough. Overall, a real nice hike. Hope to do it again when I can actually get some good views.

Great hike. Wish the views were better. The first mike or so was challenging, with the remainder of the 4 mikes to hikers camp being easy to moderate. Definitely wear the right footware, there is a fair amount of mud.
