Jan Komrska reviewed Lake Como Trail

As the others said already, the Lake Como road is horrible. It is basically destroyed by the off-road vehicles, there are loose rocks everywhere, so it is difficult to walk. It is also very dusty hence unpleasant. The trees along the road are damaged by the vehicles too which is very sad. Why to destroy the nature??? There is a marker at 4.0 mile to the lake. The next marker is only at 1.5 miles to the lake (so don't get discouraged). Hiking in the morning is quite pleasant as the road is in a shade, however when descending in the afternoon you will have sun directly in your face (bring a ton of sunscreen). Lake Como itself offers epic views on Little Bear Peak, but the surroundings don't look particularly appealing. There are pieces of burnt wood scattered everywhere... Off-road vehicles continue to drive all the way to the waterfalls under Blanca Peak destroying the trail and the surrounding nature (I am not getting that....). Wildflowers are awesome in this time of the year :-)

Jan Komrska reviewed Mount Antero Trail

It took me 9 hours on Friday. It was a fantastic day for hiking although the wind was very strong on top. There are still some snow patches preventing off-road vehicles to drive all the way up (Jupiii!) The last bit after the closed mine looks intimidating, but there is a trail which can be followed easily. The Sky Pilots are everywhere and they are awesome.

Jan Komrska reviewed Mount Shavano and Tabeguache Peak

This is amazing but hard trail. It took me 8 hours (ok my excuse is I live in NJ and I am not used to this altitude). Someone wrote earlier the first part was rocky and up and up. I thought Yeah Yeah... but I stay corrected. It’s hard! But the views are amazing, wildflowers and in full bloom (tiny alpine forget-me-nots are everywhere), you could spot longhorns and wild goats too. Tabeguache Peak looked intimidating from Mt Shavano and I considered to give up. But I was surprised how quickly I got to the top. There are multiple trails from the saddle but they all finish in a snow patch, so I just hopped through the boulders and rocks all the way up. However the trail map is not really correct on Angel of Shavano spot. It should be corrected.

Jan Komrska reviewed Boss Lake Trail

This is a pleasant hike to Boss lake (man made reservoir). You can start hiking directly off 50 (there is plenty of space off the road) or take county road 230. I decided to hike all the way which was a good choice. The road and the trail are in the forest, so the mountain views are limited. The trail off county road is well marked and well maintained. There are plenty wildflowers at this time of the year! Go for it!

I totally recommend this approach to Wheeler Peak! I took up Bull-of-the-Woods trail and down Williams Lake trail. Although the Bull is longer there are no steep inclines and there is less traffic (I met one hiker going down and I saw two hikers ahead of me in a distance on Memorial Day Sunday…, Williams Lake trail was packed!) The trail is not very well marked once you get to the saddle (crossroad with Gold Mountain trail). I got bit confused as there are multiple trails but they will all eventually finish at Bull-of-the-Woods Mountain from where the trail is straightforward. Unfortunately, once you enter Wheeler Peak Wilderness the trail starts to descent to Middle Fork Red River (creek) and you lose quite a bit of an elevation. Once you are out of the tree line on the ascent towards Mount Walter you are quite in an open and the wind can get strong and cold (I was glad I had packed my gloves). So if you wish to avoid the crowds Bull-of-the-Woods Trail is your choice! Enjoy!

This is such a lovely hike, however make sure you have a good footwear! I would agree with the classification as hard.

Jan Komrska reviewed Hunter Trail to Picacho Peak

This is an exciting hike. If you are a good hiker and you would like a challenge - hit the Hunter trail and summit Picacho Peak. The trail to the summit is well marked and maintained (Good job Park rangers!). The trail is challenging and require strong arms to grip the cables on ascent and descent :-) as others already mentioned gloves are highly recommended. Views from the trail and the summit are great! The nature is amazing - you have a great chance to spot the bald headed eagle. Blooming ocotillos - wow! Don't hesitate, put this hike on your bucket list!

This is a nice trail to the waterfall, however check the water level, because there might not be much water... Parking and access is to the trailhead is little bit tricky.

This was my second attempt. I came first in November, but there was a lot of snow already. This time there was still some snow on trail and I got lost, but you could always just follow boulder field and you get to the trail eventually. The views are stunning, but the altitude is high and will require extra effort. Fantastic hike!

The directions are bit confusing. When arriving by 4WD (SUV works too) to the TV towers, don't get distracted by the fact there are only 2 parking spots. You can continue onward and find some parking along the road that does not stop at TV towers (as one would assume from the instructions in National Geographic's guide). Continue of foot on 4WD road (but not all the way to the end (wooden cross). Watch for the spot where to turn from the 4WD road to the path (I missed it and made a huge detour). The trail itself is not well marked. And it disappears at 12,700 feet altitude (where switchbacks are supposed to start). You must scramble through the boulder fields occasionally crossing one of the multitude paths. The last bit - from the saddle to the top - you just press on straight ahead. Remember to bring gloves. It's fun and views from the top are sunning. At this time of the year the leaves are turning to yellow adding special touch to the scenery.

Fantastic first 14er! Because highly trafficked, people tent to arrive early and thus create even more congestion. I hit the trail only by 10 AM (I flew on a first flight from NY the same morning) and I could see huge crowds climbing the last stretch which worried me a lot. However by the time I reached the final part, everybody was gone! I had the trail for myself on my way back, meeting just few folks! So don't panic if you cannot start at 8 AM.
There was a brief period of snow falling :-) It just added to the wonderful experience!
