I did this counterclockwise to go up Bear Canyon and down Tejas Trail. Bear Canyon is a much steeper climb, so plan the direction you go accordingly. I’m in pretty good shape and the hike up the canyon is grueling. It is beautiful though. With the exception of not being he highest peak in Texas, I enjoyed this hike more than Guadalupe Peak. It was less crowded, the climb up Bear Canyon was my favorite trail in the park, and the views were better.

Depending what you want, this might be the hike for you. I enjoyed the climbs in the park more. This is a pretty flat trail with little trees. I will say that the springs are an oasis along this desert trail. I would be really cool to get to the Springs on a hot summer day.

Good hike that I enjoyed and the highest point in TX. The climb was steep, but nothing crazy if you are in shape. I went a week ago and it was windy and cold up top. I left at about 5am and was the 1st to the top. Wish I could have enjoyed longer on top, but it was too cold. This trail can get busy, so keep that in mind.

Very nice hike. It is a steep climb and decent with excellent views at the top. With the exception of the last 100’ though, just steep trail. The very end if you want to get to the peak where the antennas are at, it does require some rock scrambling. When I was up there 2 different groups came and went without going up. Not sure if chose not to do the rock scramble or just decided to not go. Excellent view though into the Chisos Basin and Mexico.

Good hike that ends with a cool view. I do recommend going at a non-busy time because the trail dead ends at the viewpoint. I did this about 10 days ago and there was a bunch of students on a field trip along with all the other hikers. I do think the hike could even be more scenic after a rain when the creek fills up.

This is a beautiful hike. I did it about 10 days back and the leaves had some cool colors. This trail has it all, seclusion, good vertical climb and the views from the South Rim are spectacular. If you want more mileage, you can also knock out Emory Peak.

Beautiful hike and great views. I highly recommend if you have several days in the park, but if you are only there a day or 2, there are better hikes. Some of the other hikes I would consider more strenuous, so if this mileage and climb is at your level, then check this one out.

This is a borderline 3- or 4-star hike. Excellent hike if you are in he park, it is just not something that makes me say that I want to make a special trip to do. If starting from the lodge it has a steep climb to the top. The trail stays up top for about a mile before a technical and rocky descent.

Good loop that has excellent views on top. Old CCC is less technical than the Skyline. So go in whatever direction based on that. Personally I find it easier to take the technical route on the uphill.

A fun trail that ends at the Lighthouse Rock formation. You actually hike up to the base of the formation.

Good trail. I just found it hard to follow and some it was overgrown. To be honest though, if I made it to the end that might of changed my opinion if it ended with a good view. I stopped about 1/2 mile short due to snow.

Beautiful loop with a decent amount of climb, but can be done sort of fast. Part of it runs on near the base of the jagged peaks of the Organ Mountains.

I really enjoyed this trail. Nice and easy to the pass. From there it gets a bit loose and steep to the peak, which is not always the best defined trail, but easy enough to see. While going up there is actually a false summit that you have to go over to reach the true summit. From the top you get excellent views of Las Cruces, White Sands, and all the jagged peaks of the Organ Mountain Range.

Loved this loop. If you were only here 1 day maybe it would be best to do another trail. However, if you have multiple days this loop is very cool. All single track and is good overview of the entire main part of the park.

I loved this hike and would recommend. Only reason I did not give it a 4 or 5 stars because most of the hike is on 4wd trailhead before going on single track to the top. I even enjoyed the 4wd drive road, just hard for me to say this is a 5 star trail when 10 of the 12 miles is on road.

After doing North Peak I also followers the trail to Bridge Mountain, but did not do the rock scramble to summit.

James Clark reviewed La Madre Springs Trail

Not a bad hike, but there in my opinion some better areas in the park. I will say I was sort of tired after a big mileage and once I got to the springs, I sort of looked at it and turned around.

Hiked this one last week. Had some snow up there that made descending a bit slow. The hike up is very steep and uneventful. The trail is hard to follow because they are everywhere. All probably lead to the top though. On top, wonderful views of Red Rock and Las Vegas.

Nice short hike with some minor rock scrambles that has a good view of the water feature at the end.

James Clark reviewed Badwater Basin Salt Flats Trail

To be honest, this is only an out and back walk on the salt flats. I liked it for a few reasons. First it is the lowest spot in North America. Secondly, the contrast of the massive salt flats with the snowcapped 6,000’ peaks was very beautiful.

I don’t think I broke any rules, but I also ran out on the salt flats for an additional .75 miles. Then also ran 5 miles further down the paved road. The trailhead would be a good spot to road run/bike from.

James Clark reviewed Mosaic Canyon Trail

Due to road construction to the trailhead, this turned out to be an 8 mile round trip hike from the main road to the end of the canyon. The canyon itself is very beautiful. I would recommend it to someone that was staying at Stovepipe Wells, I just wouldn’t take a trip there solely for this hike.
