An easy steady grade ascends through piney woods to views of the Columbia glacier. Sit on the iconic red Adirondack chairs and watch the Icefields trucks drive out onto the glacier and deposit little ant tourists. Keep going higher, above treeline, and feel like you're in the Alps with peaks all around and sweeping 360 degree views. Look for chunks of rock with ammonite fossils near the trail. Wear waterproof footwear, the trail can be muddy if there's been recent rain or snowfall (there was a light dusting of snow when we started out).

This is my number one all-time favorite trail, I've hiked it probably 20 times or more since I first discovered Ricketts Glen in 2000. Unfortunately the word is out and yes, in the summer it is SLAMMED with people, so don't expect any pristine people-less photos unless you're very very patient. Instead, go in the early spring when the wildflowers abound, go in November when you can feel fall slipping into winter, and go in the winter too! In January or February, starting from Adams Falls on Rt 118 and heading up toward Waters Meet when the waterfalls are frozen is totally amazing. I shouldn't even be telling you my secrets because I don't even want you there, I want to keep this jewel all to myself. On second thought...the Falls Trail is super lame, so stay away!

First know that the traffic noise will NOT diminish as you ascend, like I was hoping. Even at the summit you will hear the highway. That being said, it's a pleasant hike, the woods are beautiful and I love the rocky spine-walking at the top. I found it impossible to locate the trail down to complete the loop so it turned into an out-and-back hike. Views of the river are nice but somewhat obstructed, I can't imagine how you'd see much of anything when the leaves are on the trees. I probably wouldn't hike this again due to the road noise.
