Isabel Busch reviewed Knobstone Trail: Spurgeon Hollow to Delaney Park

The trail was very good marked and maintained pretty good as well. We went early on a Saturday and just saw one parked car but met no other hikers at all. We saw a few deers, chipmunks and beautiful wildflowers. There were some spider webs but not an awful lot, we experienced worse. The flies were kinda annoying though. The only downside and the reason for not giving this one 5 stars is the amount of flies, mosquitos and that we got attacked by mini ticks. Long pants, long socks and anti tick spray on shoes, socks and pants didn’t hold them back. Besides that it was a really pretty and strenuous trail. I’d suggest to start the loop by going left, then you’ll start out with a couple of climbs and the second half is mostly flat. I’d defiantly do this one again, but I’d check for the mini ticks every couple of hours. Those are nasty!

We thought this would be a nice afternoon hike to finish up a good day of hiking. Well, the first mile is pretty decent and on a trail. Once you leave the trail to head to the eagles nest you basically crawl through the woods running into spider webs every 2 feet. Besides being attacked by spiders we saw several bear scratch marks, foot prints and bear poop but luckily no bears. Once we got to the eagles nest there was only one mile left so we thought: well, this can only get better! If only we’d known.. we we’re running all over the place on top of the cliff trying to follow the trail map to get down to the river. After an hour of unsuccessfully walking in circles trying to find a way down we decided to backtrack and find our own way down to the river. This part got super sketchy because there was no trail but a lot of slippery and moving stones. After we found the „trail“ again and we hit the river we were able to enjoy the view. The river is actually really pretty, we didn’t care about the caves anymore. All in all I would not do this hike again and I would not recommend it to anyone.

And FIY: there is no waterfall. Just something that seemed to be one a long time ago.

We thought this would be an easy going loop to finish up a nice weekend but the trails are super confusing. There is not that „one loop“ we ended up doing several loops and crossing paths we did before and had to take some trails twice. There are definitely nice views but the trail system seemed like a maze.

Pretty decent hike. The staircase is not part of the official trails so we had to check the map a couple of times because we got a bit lost. Other than that was pretty easy. We had some nice views but the staircase itself was not that overwhelming.
