My family hiked this 2-day, 1-night section over our kids' (ages 7 and 10) school Spring Break. Being early April the weather was both awful and spectacular. The plan was to grab a shuttle from the nice folks at Mountain Harbour B+B in nearby Roan Mountain, so we didn't have to retrace our steps. We had to scrap our plans for the first day because of a flash-blizzard/tempest, but we drove up to Carvers Gap after the storm cleared to snap a few photos. The next two days were 70° and sunny. We pitched our tent in a small grove of trees on Little Hump Mountain and had stunning 360° views for both sunset and sunrise.

This hike is mostly downhill going northbound, but there are a couple of tough uphill sections. We encountered several through-hikers, even one who had done the entire trail previously. He said this was one of his favorite sections along the whole AT. Having just completed it, I can see why -- about 1/2 of the 15 miles are wide open and you can see for miles. Overmountain Shelter is really nice and there is plenty of water along the route to refill canteens. I may have to come back to see the blooming Rhododendrons.

This is a great day hike. Not as populated as some trails in the area, and quite challenging without ever feeling unsafe. My small group of four trekked this on March 2 (after a torrential overnight rain) and found some snow near the summit. The section about 2/3-rds of the way up is quite beautiful looking down into Fay Canyon. We packed in lunch and ate on a ledge looking southwest over the valley below. Plan on 5-6 hours round trip.

The next day we went on a hot air balloon ride and coincidentally passed by Bear Mountain again -- this time with a different vantage.

For the adventurous, take the trail past Symphony Lake up to Triangle Peak. My group backpacked this in early August 2013. We base camped at Lower Symphony Tarn and had a great time exploring the area. My favorite hike to date. The trail moves quickly from easy to difficult once past the boulder field. The scenery cannot be beat.
