jon lowell reviewed Charlies Bunion via Appalachian Trail

we did this and branched off to include the jump off and everthing totalled out to 4hrs 23min and 8.8 miles. i think it was a total of 3.9 miles uphill. i slept good that night!
i usually start early (6am) but since the sun is coming up later we started at 9am. it still wasnt crowded and having the sun directly overhead at the bunion really helped with some good pictures

totally worth doing the extra .6 miles if you are doing charles bunion. it only added 40 minutes to that hike.

id give this hike a 4/10 for difficulty. there isnt too much to look at on the way but the falls are beautiful.
on a side note: you have to take a one way road to get to the trail and you cant pass so you are at the mercy of the cars in front of you to keep going. there were lots of deer and turkeys in the meadows and people would stop in the middle of the street, halting traffic for their pictures. it took 30 minutes to go 3 miles and its the only way to get there

first mile is easy last mile is STAIRS!! no joke.....one mile of mostly stairs
nice view at the end but like most people have reported the last .2 is closed off with a giant gate blocking the path and no way around it. the "new" view was still beautiful.

i called this the grandpa and baby trail. around every bend was either an old couple "hiking" in slacks and polos or a family pushing a stroller. its hard to take pics of the waterfall because people feel the need to walk up to the waterfall and touch it, regardless of who is taking pics. felt more like a guided nature walk than a hike

did this hike today and the last ~1 mile is still snow covered with lots of fog. we turned around at 3.6 miles because the fog was thick and it was hard to find the trail in the snow. i would recommend a stick or poles for balance on the snow. we saw a bear on the way back about .3 miles from the start of the trailhead in mowich

did this hike 6/30 - very little snow - ok to navigate.

the first 2 miles of this trail was the absolute worst trail I've ever encountered. its 2 miles of horse shit and the smell of horse shit. its so unsanitary and unsafe it isn't even funny. they had bear signs up on this trail and I couldn't even look up the first 2 miles to be aware of my surrounding because it was just constant horse crap. after these 2.1 miles its ok. if I could skip the first 2 miles i'd give a 5*

hiked on 6/26/18, we went as far as the start of the switch backs then turned around because of time. its a beautiful hike to the pass with some slight navigation skills needed around mile 4.25 for about a 1/4 mile. it isn't hard, just follow the water upstream and you will be fine. we did not see any snow in the pass, but again we did not go to the top

hiked on 6/25 - the trail is not closed at 3.5 miles but it is roped off and not recommend you pass, but if you have snow climbing gear then you can probably make it. we stopped at 3.5 miles and was still worth it in my opinion but I want to come back to do the whole hike.

we went around 8-9am and it was CROWDED. its a good hike if 1) you need recovery day from a long hike 2) want to do a "family" hike 3) you are older and have problems with some of the other moderate or difficult hikes. if none of those apply to you, i'd pick something else.

    secluded is the word

we passed no one to and from the lake. the views going to the lake are all wooded so there is no panoramic views, but it was the most relaxing and secluded pine forest hike ive ever done. finch lake is beautiful and we did not have time to go on to pear lake unfortunately. i would recommend this hike for anyone that has done most of the more popular routes and are looking for less traveled paths.

PS - don't go into the water at finch lake - my wife pointed out leeches were all over lake bed

i screwed up when i did this hike

towards the end of the hike (maybe last .5 miles) there is a section covered in hardened snow (almost ice) and you have to cross it to continue. i thought chasm lake was on our left and it wasn't, it was peacock lake. you can't see chasm lake from the trail. you have to cross this icy section and scramble UP at the end of the trail to the right. either bring poles or look for a long sturdy stick on the way to the lake because you will need it to cross this icy section. if you slip and fall you will fall down a slope (not a drop off) about 100ft.

great hike - but be forwarned that you will need to climb a 15ft sheer wall right next to a waterfall. the views are worth the stress once you make it up there, that is, unless you fall down :(

i honestly didn't like this hike at all. the trail was covered completely in large cobblestone and i kept losing traction. there is nothing impressive on the way up and you are basically hiking the entire trail for the last half mile. the view is very good but the effort for the view was too much in my opinion.
