This is the lower falls located in the same area in DuPont Forest. They are an way stroll in the opposite direction from the other falls. The falls are not especially high, but are wide. You are able to walk down along the rocks which provides a great background for pictures.

This trail is right off the Unicoi exit off I26. You get off the exit and take a right. Parking is to the right. There are signs for a new building coming. This is a long but very clear and well marked trail. There definitely is interstate noise for the first several miles up. The view from the new firepower is just breath taking! It is one firepower that you can go up in and feel safe. You can also cheat and drive up a back way that I have not done as of yet. You can park up there and walk the remaining mile or so to the top if the almost 10 miles hike is too long.

These falls are just beautiful! It is a short hike in from the road. The trail is unmarked so you need to follow down from parking area. Once you are at the water you will cross all the way over to the other side and head right. You will be coming in above the falls. You will have to turn around backwards and climb down the trail at times. Not a good house with small children. Lots of poison ivy. Once down at the bottom of the falls they are just beautiful!

I did this trail on horse back. Moses Cone had created these trails for his wife to take carriage rides through the property. To hike on foot may become boring, but it's just fine on horseback. It is a shame you are not allowed to do on bicycle.

There are many trails in this park. One goes around the lake which is a long hike but great on horse back. There is another that leads to a fire tower. This one is reached by heading north from the "bathrooms" and going under the parkway. You will go through woods and it opens up into a huge field. Did this hike in February. Be prepared for strong cold wind! The views from the fire tower are worth the trip!

On a clear day this is a must see. 360 views a breath taking. At the end if September it was 6-8 degrees cooler than below. We came once before when it was overcast and long range views were just not the same! You can take the paves road right before the road turns to gravel and follow to end. Take a right than another right to the trail head. Otherwise you are on gravel for several miles.

This is not the Roan Mountain Trail that I am aware of. It looks like the dot on the map is off in Erwin area. Roan Mountain has its own address roan Mountain Tn. I will post that hike.

You start off from the parking lot on Horse Creek for a very short distance and cut off to the left onto Squibb Creek Trail. Two other trails cut off to the left Turkey Pen Branch Trail (Primitive) then Middle Spring Ridge Trail which goes all the way up to Big Butt on the AP trail.

This hike has 9 creek crossings with only 3 foot bridges. Be prepared to get wet. This trail is not marked well and we missed it several time before finding it. We ended up calling it the Elusive falls. One you do find it they are worth the trip! They are located in the horse creek recreation area in the Sampson Mountain Wilderness. It's approximately a 5 mile hike round trip.

We've done this hike at several different timespan the year. It seems to always be very windy as you will notice all the foliage up there is quite twisted. There is at the top an area to take in the view, but trails leading to the west can get you away from the crowd. It's a steady climb to the top of this well traveled trail, but the views are breathtaking.

This was a rocky path almost the while way. There are a few rock outcroppings. The trail is near the blue ridge parkway so you hear a lot of traffic at times. The lodge burned down so all that is left is rock retaining walls. There are only a few views. The trail to the marque is 2 miles so its over a four mile round trip.

Did this hike in the winter time this past January. It is a steady grade uphill with some areas leveled off.
When I went the water was very high and the crossings were difficult to avoid getting water in your boots!
Some of these pictures are quite different from my experience as the water appears low at the crossings. Some of the crossings are quite difficult in high water to figure out best place to cross.
There are two falls on this one. One lower then you hike a little more and reach the big falls at the end.
Overall very beautiful hike. If you want to avoid the snakes that I have seen mentioned go in the winter.
