Steve Hylton reviewed Tobias Creek Trail

Took this trail again on 11/7/15 and still in good shape other that there is snow towards the top that has knocked down some small trees across the trail. I hiked all the way to Tobias Pk which has a foot of snow

    Steve Hylton reviewed Kern Peak

Did this hike/climb on 9-5-15. I took the old Kern Pk trail which was in ok shape but you could still follow it all the way to the peak and is faint in some places but easy to find. Its in real good shape once you get above treeline. Also did nearby Toowa Pk to the east, but had to do X-country hiking to get to it. Golden Trout Ck is still flowing quite well better than the So. Fork Kern River

This is a great backpack trip into Hockett Mdw where there are good quiet campsites and the 3 mile one-way trail to Cahoon Rock which is where I went and there are great views . It is not much of a climb, it is just a rock outcrop on a ridge. The is a trail that dives off to Evelyn Lake for another two miles but I didn't have time to hike there

Steve Hylton reviewed Cannell Meadow Trail

The trail is in great shape just a few ruts that the OHV'ers created, good steady uphill climb and its 10 miles one-way to Cannell Mdw. Didn't see any motorcycles or Mtn Bikers or nobody hiking for that matter. Did this hike on 11/28/14 and there is no snow and I was at the 8,000ft level

This trail is in excellent shape as it was just maintained not that long ago, lots of uphill and it really gets steep once you cross the creek to Sugarloaf Rd which is a paved road. I did this hike from Fairview all the way to Baker Pk and Baker Pt, both peaks have excellent views atop there summits. I would say the one-way mileage is 13 miles

Steve Hylton reviewed Dome Rock Trail

Hiked to this peak from near R-Ranch which is mainly along roads for a more of an all day thing and to get the miles and the elevation gain once on top the views of the Kern Gorge are just amazing. It was a nice clear day.

Steve Hylton reviewed Big Meadow to Manter Meadow

Took the south trail to the southern end of Manter Mdw, the meadow was nice and green but if you want to hike the other trails in the Domeland Wilderness with the exception of the N. Manter Trail be prepared to do some bushwacking as these trails haven't be maintained for years

Steve Hylton reviewed Packsaddle Cave Trail

Just hiked this trail on 4/5/14 and its in good shape other then when it drops down into Packsaddle Canyon it gets a little brushy but passable. The creek is flowing due to the spring snowmelt so expect to get your feet wet as the trail crosses the creek a few times. Didn't go inside the cave but not to bad other then some minor vandalism at the mouth of the cave where people like to carve their names that they were here etc...

Just came off this trail on 8/4/13, didn't do the loop but backpacked it from Mineral King in the Sequoia National Park, it is a steep climb if your going to MK but very scenic lots of trees and meadows

    Steve Hylton reviewed Cottonwood Loop

This is a great hike the Cottonwood Lakes are some of the most beautiful lakes in the Sierras, its real quiet and real nice when you go on a weekday-less people. The hike up to New Army Pass then down to ( Old ) Army Pass was a real good all day hike but get an early start, it will take you ALL day to do this.

Great uphill hike, this trail leads and ends at Squirrel Mdw but I continued another 5 miles to Breckenridge Lookout but its all road hiking. The trail conditions: 2 downed oak trees and pretty brushy up towards the top just before you get to treeline. Did this hike on 5/19/13

Steve Hylton reviewed Windy Gap Trail

I hiked this trail on 6/2/13 and headed north to climb Slate mtn. The trail conditions were somewhat OK, there were quite a few downed trees but you could get around them pretty easy and the trail is faint in some places also, but the short climb to Slate from the trail was awesome its got excellent views into the Golden Trout Wilderness. But the trail south of Windy Gap is brushy and would not recommend hiking it. I finally had to turn around and head back to my truck.

This is a short ( about 2 miles one-way ) hike but the views are great. The lookout tower is not there anymore due to a fire.

Its a good little walk. They should'nt have paved the trail its takes away the naturalness of the scenery.

Its a great half day hike, some parts of the trail are steep but if your in great shape its no problem for you to reach the top of the peak. Its got lots of tall pines so its a great forest hike.
