I’m going to rank this as one of my top five favorite hikes of all time. And I’ve done a lot of hiking. I agree with several of the comments that this could probably be designated as a hard hike as opposed to a moderate hike. The difficulty lies not so much in the distance however in the extreme incline and constant step up. Although the path is paved for quite a distance, the incline is very steep and I saw many people struggling and taking lots of breaks. That being said, the views are consistently beautiful! Many of them are spectacular. I don’t believe I have stopped so much to take pictures in a long time. This trail is shown as a loop trail and I believe if you go counterclockwise at the junction of the loop it will be an easier trek going up. You will still have lovely views but they will not be nearly as close to the falls and the water had you gone clockwise. Either decision you make you will still be at or near the falls. You can do this. If you’re tired take breaks and move forward. You will be truly rewarded. We took plenty of breaks and had a lot of nice lunch at the very top and it took us about 5 1/2 hours. My Apple Watch told me I did about 150 flights of stairs.

This is a great trail and it’s pretty much doable even if you’re used to Moderate hikes. You just have to go slowly and take your time as it is steep in several places. Don’t make the mistake of coming up to the waterfall and missing the sign for Fern Lake to the right. We were so mesmerized by the waterfall and crossing it that we continued on to Yost lake before we realized we were off the path To Fern Lake. Do not cross the waterfall, turn right and look up the hill for the trail to Fern. From this point it becomes rather steep but as I said if you go slowly it’s not really much further up. It’s a lovely spot.

Did this hike today. We live at sea level so the altitude was a bit of a challenge. We just took it slowly. This is one of those hikes where you know you are approaching the top and then BAM!!!! The views are spectacular. DON’T STOP! Keep on keepin’ on and you will be rewarded. Still plenty of wildflowers and lovely little streams. I agree with the other reviews, when you get to the bowl, look left, go left. At the top, follow the ridge to the right and head for the rocky tip. It was blowing like crazy today and I was glad for my warmer puff jacket. Once and the top keep going right and go down opposite where you climbed up. No obvious path until you get down to stream so make your own way. For a Saturday we didn’t encounter more than a dozen people. My Apple Watch said we did 8 miles.
