Heather Lucas reviewed Lost Lake via Hessie Trail

Hiked this today 10-25-18. Easy parking at 11am on A Thursday but I could see how it would be tough on a weekend.

Very rocky overall and not a ton of views until the lake. Still very pretty. Micro spikes are a must for the last mile or so the lake. It’s entirely snow and ice. Most people we saw did not have them and really struggled. Overall an easy pretty hike, that was dog friendly with a nice lake payoff.

Gorgeous wild flowers, good steady incline. Mix of shaded areas and open, sweeping views. Very dog friendly. A must do!

Really gorgeous trail! Easy-moderate rating from me except for the last little bit before the third lake. It seems straight up and I had to stop several times to catch my breath.

There isn’t a lot of parking at the lot or the trail head it’s self. We arrived right before 8 am on a Thursday and there were two spots left that filled before we finished getting our stuff out of the car.

Super dog friendly but after the first 1/2 mile or so it’s very exposed and there isn’t a ton of water until you get to the first lake. We were fine getting there early in the AM but I could imagine it being really hot in the afternoon.

Tons of wild flowers out now and lots of spots to stop for pictures and get some sweeping views.

Absolutely wonderful trail. Amazing views starting from the trail head to the lake. Tons of wildflowers right now which add gorgeous pops of color. On the easy side of moderate for me today but I feel we have especially good weather with a light breeze and plenty of shade. There are no hard or technical aspects to this hike but there are lots of rocks to work around and there is one “iffy” spot where you have to walk on rocks over rushing water to pass. It’s an easy crossing but you do need to have proper shoes because the rocks are slippery. Some muddy spots but really no snow to speak of as of 6/28/18.

A few pointers that may help fellow hikers:

    - the road to the trail head is as described in other reviews, we went very slow in a Kia Soul but others with lower clearance vehicles blazed past, though we did see one person who we thought going too fast hit a bump hard and then have to stop and check their car. Be careful people, it’s not a race!

-the bathrooms at this trail head are probably the worst I’ve ever seen (or smelled). Bring your own TP (there was none) and hand sanitizer!

-We arrived later than planned on a Thursday at 10:30am. We had to park a ways down the road. I can’t imagine trying to park here on the weekends.

-despite the parking, the trail never felt crowded or overrun. Every was nice and courteous and seemed to have proper water and gear.

-this hike is super dog friendly! Tons of water and my two 10 year old pug mixes handled it with ease and had a blast!

Bring a lunch and hang out by the lake, it’s quiet and peaceful. Highly recommend this hike!

Loved this hike. We parked right near the mileage sign but be aware there are “no parking” signs all around so you could get towed. Honestly, the first mile or so is pretty boring and just uphill with no views. We also got there late (11am) and there was NO shade the entire hike so be mindful of that. After the first mile you get some great views and start passing some water and a river. Closer to the lake there were small amounts of snow but it’s all almost gone. Totally doable in hiking shoes- we even saw someone in chacos. This hike was easy-moderate overall and mainly moderate just because of the intense sun beating down on us. The lake is *gorgeous* right now with mix of green and snow on the mountains around. We will definitely be back!

Really enjoyed this trail. Overall I’d say it’s easy with a few moderate parts sprinkled in that get your heart rate up. No technical areas by any means. Absolutely gorgeous to view the sunset from in the evenings!
