Heather Ijames reviewed Summit Lake Trail

Second time on this trail, but this time we parked at the westbound I-80 rest area and started there instead of at the designated start over a mile farther. So if you want to shorten it, start at the rest area. Otherwise a nice, pretty trail with lots to see. Summit lake is beautiful and good for a swim. My only complaint is the yahoos who 4x4 in from a road on the east side of the lake. They come in loud, stay loud, and bring loud things that hikers wouldn't carry in. If forestry closed that road, it'd be perfection. But since it's the yahoos who make it unpleasant and not the trail or lake itself, still five stars.

Really pretty, well-maintained trail. We got to Big Ben tree and went to the right, got as far as the creek and came back, so we didn't even do the majority of the trail, so I can't speak for the whole thing. What we did see was gorgeous.

The lakes are the only good thing about this trial and it's easier to get to the lakes via the Salmon Lake Trial, which is shorter, less elevation gain, and beautiful. This trail should not be the designated loch leven trail; salmon lake trial is the most direct and it's beautiful too. Check it out.

This trail is the right one to get to the loch leven lakes. The designated loch leven trail is longer steeper and uglier. This trail dumps you out at lower loch and middle and high loch are only 1/4, 1 mike longer, respectively. Perfect backpacking trial. Lots of campsites at all three lakes.

Easy, flat. Prettier view is taking a boat or kayak around the lake, but this is also pretty fantastic for taking a leisurely stroll around.

My only beef is the fact that you couldn't cross over where the Sacramento River is flowing into the lake. So currently, there is no way around the whole trail. If you're going to do it while the river is up, just stay to the right of the marina. Otherwise, you're not going to get very far. It was also cold when we went, so that's why we were not going to walk through the river to get to the other side. If it is warm enough, and you are willing to take your shoes off, would probably be quite refreshing.

Can't really complain about the river flowing, though, considering the drought we've had for years. So, I'll take it! Just a warning to others, though, try to stay to the right of the marina if Lake is at capacity.

Really pretty, easy trail. The only elevation climb is in first 20mins. It's straight up, but really smooth path. Walking under a canopy of trees almost the whole time, the whole trail. Bring your bug spray.

The only downfall, is this doesn't lead to anything. You go right to the creek, and have to turn right around. Not really enough space to even sit and have lunch or have four people stand at the same time.

The pictures already posted to this trail are not on this trail. I think they kept on the Pacific crest Trail to castle crags to get their shots. I would likely stay on Pacific crest next time, to see a better end game. But, following this map, you turn off to the right to go to root creek.

Like I said, great trail but nowhere to really sit down in the sun and relax.

Otherwise, this has to be one of the easier portions of the Pacific crest Trail.

Plan on going straight up, much of the time on rocks. The good point is it's less than a mile of a strenuous uphill. I thought it would be an easier uphill, so don't count on that. We went up during a summer storm so the view was mostly clouds. Cute little lake up top and you can tell would be a spectacular view on a clear day. If you want a beginner trail to break in your kids for backpacking, or more strenuous trails, this is it. It has the uphill climb, but without the extended duration.

The only thing making me only give four stars is it's easy to lose the trail once you get on the rocky part. There's a "fork" in the rocky part and you're to stay to the right, but honestly we world have missed it if someone hadn't just came down that part and told us to stay right at a stick marker.

After that, there were multiple times we would have lost the trail if prior hikers hadn't put up the stone stack markers. So, just be careful. Use your AllTrails app gps (always on even without service) to double check your trail.

Great, easy, well maintained trail with THREE gorgeous waterfalls. What a treat. Had two whiners in tow and they barely made a peep based on the beauty of following a river the whole time. Went in mid June and the river and falls were roaring. Another way to go is drive up to upper falls and hike down. Lower falls was the least climatic of the three and is the busiest, people wise, based on the campground right there.
