Heather Colt reviewed Crater Lakes Trail via Moffat Tunnel East Portal Trailhead

Beautiful little trail, moderate until the little bit of scrambling at the end. The lakes are lovely. And it was not crowded at all, only saw one group of 4 backpackers and a couple the entire day.

Nice varied trail. Nice lake destination at the end. I arrived at 8am and there were only a few cars in the parking lot. I had the lake all to myself for a half hour, and then only 6 other people were there for the next half hour. On the way down I did pass 50 people hiking up. So maybe get there early because it is pretty peaceful. I wish people didn’t leave their dog poop bags all over the trails though. Just why????????

Beautiful views the entire way. Definitely go to glass lake, too. I thought the trail was moderate. The waterfall scramble was interesting but not too difficult.

I’d do it again, mainly because it is such a great little workout. Don’t underestimate that uphill! It is totally doable though. There is a $2.50/hr parking fee between 8 and 5, but I recommend hiking before 8am anyway this time of year. 6am would be ideal so that you get the most shade and the best temperature to make the hike as pleasant as possible.

Great hike. Beautiful. Lots of incline but doable. Many many people spend the night before at or near the trailhead, so if you are not there and parked by 5am plan to park on the road. But a lot of people do that. The road up ... I went 2.3 miles in with my Kia Sedona minivan before stopping to camp the night before with my group. The Kia Sedona has the highest clearance of any minivan at 6.7 inches and although the road was rough I did not bottom out or have any issues for those first 2.3 miles. The next morning, while walking to the trailhead from the campsite, I noticed that after the 2.3 mile point on that road that the pot holes were a LOT deeper in some places. I probably could have made it with enough momentum in the minivan but I like my car and would not have wanted to do that. So, if you don’t have a higher clearance vehicle or AWD and actually like your car maybe that 2.3 miles in on the road is a good place to park or camp.

I like this trail. It is a great workout. Hikers beware though, there was a HUGE rattlesnake on the trail 6/22 about 1/4 of the way up and he was coiled and rattling right on the trail. I am pretty sure I scared him as much as he startled me. Just be aware that there are rattlesnakes on/near this trail and watch/listen for them. Stay safe!

I loved this trail! It was beautiful the entire way. We parked in the lower parking lots, but there was parking in the upper parking lot when we got to the trailhead, on a Tuesday at about 11:00am. Lots of wildflowers this time of year. A little bit of slushy snow in parts but nothing to worry about. Just a really beautiful trail. The hike to the upper lake from the lower lake is very short, totally do it. The lake you see most of the hike must be the private lake. I’ll do this one again.

This hike is easy. Well maintained trail. My kids loved the view on the top of the rocks.

Great hike for a workout. The first 1/3 is pretty steep. It is not as bad after that, but still uphill. Would be a great trail to train on. Really nice views as well.

Decent trail. A bit muddy at first this time of year but it dries up not far in. The trail is narrow with a lot of rocks. Nice sweeping views of the valleys below.

It is a decent park. Looks like it would be fun to paddle board there, and they have lots of stations for grilling. I have been to better maintained parks in Colorado. Lots of bike riders. If you need to get outside, it is a decent outing.

This is an easy flat trail. There are bathrooms and picnic areas throughout. The bathrooms were clean. If you go to the dam it is about 3.2 miles, so 6.4 up and back if you turn around at that point. Lots of people jogging and great for bikes as the road is compact. I even saw two people with strollers. The trail follows a creek for much of the way. I saw some people fishing. The Big Horn Sheep did not disappoint; they even blocked the trail for a bit. :)
