This hike is insane. I feel like I left part of myself back at the top of Half Dome and I still haven’t come down. The trek up is long and steady, have an early start, bring plenty of water and food as well as sun protection. Wear shoes with GRIP and I mean, serious grip. Bring gloves for the cables and I recommend using a harness and carabiner. I climbed it without, but it’s dangerous and slippery and all forearms on the way up. There was a lot of traffic on the cables so it was a lot of waiting and holding on. Most people along the trail, especially the cables are communicative and encouraging. Take it at your pace and you will make it! So worth the effort. Do not risk doing this climb in anything but clear and sunny weather.

Oof!! It’s a steep trail alright. The elevation gain is crazy, slow and steady definitely wins the race on this one. So worth it though, incredibly beautiful. You can also take the John Muir trail which is a longer but more gradual trail up to the falls and then come down the other way. Either way, you won’t be sorry, just bring plenty of water and food. It’s a popular trail and you’ll find a lot of people making the journey to Half Dome or the backcountry campground.

I climbed Mt. Tallac a few years ago and was about .5mi from the peak when I had to stop due to an injury I sustained the prior day. I came back, had an early start and with multiple short breaks because of the 40lb pack I brought with me, and reached the summit within 3.5 hours. The descent is what I consider to be the most intense part of the entire trek. Make sure you wear shoes with GRIP, keep your ankles loose but not too loose. The rocks are very loose and it’s easy to misstep and slip or roll your ankles. Be wary while navigating the trail as well as there are different trails that break from the main trail if you’re busy watching your footing like I was for the majority of the hike. So worth it nonetheless. It was pretty cool and the wind was heavy. Definitely bring enough water and a lunch to enjoy at the summit.
