We did this trail starting in 29 palms and then drove south instead of how the trail suggests. There is mostly long stretches of smooth sand where you can travel very quickly. Once you get into the mountains, it becomes a bit more tricky but still quite doable. There is only one true moderate portion and that would be near the beginning (if you are driving north), once you are beyond that most of it is a cake walk. There are several mines (that we missed) before you exit the park that I would suggest going to. Plenty of scenic views as well. You do need a 4x4 and relatively high clearance for this trail. There appears to be remnants of flash flooding and river beds that you drive through so keep in mind if you go during the rain season. This was completed in a Dodge powerwagon.

This was a really cool trail. We did it just after the Blue Cut fires had been extinguished which provided a bit of a charred landscape. Right off the I-15, it's easy to get to and can be completed in less than two hours. It dumps you out right by Silverwood Lake. My suggestion would be to continue onto Pilot Ridge Trail and take that over to Lake Arrowhead. Easy trail with several very technical bits off to the side. Each technical shortcut had a fireroad bypass, easily completed by any stock 4x4.

The trail itself was phenomenal. I'd highly recommend it to all levels of drivers. Overall the main fireroad is easy to drive and shouldn't give any stock 4x4 vehicle a problem at all. There are side tracks that would definitely venture into the hard genre. When we did it, the 2016 Blue Cut fire had just been put out which revealed charred landscapes sprinkled with neon pink fire retardant. I would do this trail soon to check that out.

Keeping that in mind, I would be forewarned for the rainy season. There are areas that look like they could easily be washed out and become incredibly muddy, even more so now with all the trees being burnt to a crisp. We drove the Cleghorn Ridge trail and then ventured to this one, taking us from the I-15 to Lake Arrowhead. This trail can be done in under 2 hours with minimal ventures onto the side roads. Overall I'd highly recommend it.
