Easy walk, reservoir is very low, leaves are barely starting to change. Beautiful day!

Chris Harrison reviewed Rolling Creek Trail Via Colorado Trail

I requested an edit to the trail description. From the trail head (adjacent to the trail head for segment 4 of the Colorado trail) to Wigwam trail, a hike travels about 6.4 miles. That was the information from the forest service and that was my experience on the hike (12.8 miles round trip). The first three miles are rolling and pretty. Most of the creeks were dry. I saw some camping spots at Rolling Creek, which had plenty of water. From there, the trail begins a steep ascent over 2.5 miles to a nice saddle with camping, but no water that I found. The descent tow Wigwam trail was a touch washed out in places, but you're in the amazing Lost Creek Wilderness. There's some additional camping and water around the intersection of Rolling Creek Trail and Wigwam trail. I only encountered two groups on the trail after the first three miles (once it starts climbing). I saw more along the first three miles, which looked like a great little hike with nice views of the Castle. If you take Wigwam Trail up to Brookside-McCurdy and connect with CO Trail segment 4, you can hike back out for a nice 25 mile loop.

The drive up doesn't require 4WD, but high clearance is helpful. Decent shade and sweet views. As noted, the trail is steep and washed out due to lack of water bars, which can make the descent slippery in dry conditions.

Varied terrain and views for a relatively short hike. I found the roads slick and muddy in the rain. The trails were in better shape than the roads! I camped overnight between the two buttes; bring all the water you need, as there is none on the trail. Prepare for complete exposure to the elements on the trail (sun, rain, snow, wind....) Amazing sunset and sunrise in a cool landscape.

Plan to park in a lower lot and add an extra two miles (one in, and one back) to your hike to the trail head due to winter road closure. A fair amount of people on the trail though Ouzel falls (fairly icy and dormant so far as I observed). Traction devices would help to Ouzel Falls. Beyond that, I wished I had brought my snow shoes by the Ouzel Lake / Thunder Lake split. The trail to Thunder Lake bettertraveled, but I broke trail up to Ouzel Lake. Good for the lungs. Happy New Year! Bonus: Zero cell reception.

Chris Harrison reviewed Staunton Ranch Trail to Mason Creek Trail Loop

Rode this clockwise (SR to BL to MC) - steady climb on trail that was not too technical and no hike-a-bike sections. Final three miles of downhill went too fast, as it always does. There were some snowy spots, but not icy, so I could still manage on a mountain bike. I might prefer this counter-clockwise to grind out the climb and enjoy a 4-ish mile descent. The middle offers a saddleback with about 300 feet down to the Old Mill Site and 300 feet back up over the next hill. Tracking with Runkeeper shows 9.25 miles with 1300 feet of elevation gain.
