The historical walk through Pioneer America in Homestead Meadows makes this a must for Northern Colorado. Leave early in the morning and bring lunch. You will want to explore the Homestead Meadows Loop with information markers at the half a dozen different homesteads. You will get an appreciation of how tough these pioneers were.

Bring the pooch, but please put 'em on a leash. You're a long way out to have to take care of your dog after it gets into a fight with another canine.

Take the DOG! Since RMNP is closed to having pets on their trails, it's great to find one close to Estes Park were the pooch gets some miles. I took my two children as well. We did not summit as I was more interested in having fun then finding out what my kid's limits were. The trail is a slow accent with beautiful views of Twins Sisters, Longs Peak and Estes Park. Only crossed two other hikers on the trip.

Customize your ride with the loops at Happy Jack. You can go as easy or hard as you want depending on the route. Watch for hikers and equestrians that frequent the trail.

Great hiking around the alpine lakes of Wyoming's Snowy Range. Still trying to get the allusive golden trout. Can get crowded on the weekends.

I did this trail 2.5 times when I first moved to Colorado. The first time I had to head back down to make an appointment. The second time it was fogged over and raining. When I made the summit, you couldn't see anything. You just could go up anymore. The third time, the weather was perfect and so was the weather. Great views of the front range on the way up the east side and gorgeous views of Longs Peak from the summit.

Most of the trail is in a valley. Did see some wildlife and few campers. I tried fly fishing some of the alpine lakes at the top, but to no avail. Would like to get back to try some of the connecting trails.

Great trail. Beautiful views. Lots of people. Trailhead parking lot will always be full on the weekend for this popular hike. Try to get up there on a weekday.

Fun short hike into an alpine meadow. The hike runs along a drainage so be prepared for water crossings. The hike is only about 4 miles not the 11.5. It is also a couple miles south on Long Draw Road which runs south off Highway 14. There are several other connecting trails if you want to get higher then the valley floor. Look for moose.

Wyoming solitude in the backyard of the Snowy Mountains. This is a good get away from everyone, I saw no one. Beaver ponds were full of brookies. Nice niews of the Platte River Valley and the Sierra Madres.

The elevation is up there, so , be prepared.

Overnight trip to fly fish the Encampment. This was beautiful, secluded and the fishing was great. Was introduced to the Encampment by my Grandfather Robert as a young child. I started in Hogg Park and walked downhill toward town.

James W reviewed The Thorofare (Backpacking)

This was the start of it all. I worked at a scout camp and we guided backpacking trips down the Thorofare Trail. All the way down the east side, the trail is pretty flat. Check with local conditions, but most streams can't be crossed until late June depending on runoff. I remember seeing the streams full of Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout during spawning. Truly cool. This is bear country! The tall Ponderosa Pines were the back scratches for the bruins and were covered with fur and claw scratches. I'll have to locate a picture of my size 12 Scarpas being dwarfed by a grizzly paw print.

Trail was used by equestrians as well as boaters.

I mixed up my review of this and Hermit Trail. This was the first trail I ever did in GCNP. It rained and I froze from not being prepared. Something about cotton clothes. This is was the most difficult trail I have ever been on. Lots of boulders to climb down and very little for trail markers. Good thing everything is down!

If you have good map reading/route finding skills this is a very rewarding trip. Physically challenging, remote and haunting in the rain.

James W reviewed Hermit Trail - Grand Canyon National Park

This was my introduction to the GCNP. It was raining, I mean flooding, and the Park Service put up the trail closed sign . . . after I was a mile down the trail. I was surprised to see the difficulty rating, until I remember the boulders. It was fun, and the canyon looks much different under rainclouds. I did it again two years later, different weather, but we started late so most was in the dark.

    Bring plenty of water.

This is the hike to get your kids into hiking. Also if you are looking to take say a grandparent out, I would go to Sprague Lake. Trail is almost flat all the way, handicap accessable and your never more then 1/2 mile from the parking lot. There are also juctions with other trails and fly fishing is good too.

Fun short hike up 500 ft via switchbacks then an easy loop around the lake. My six year old did it with a little prodding. It rained the day we went, which gave the valley a different type of beauty.
