Gray Diffee reviewed Barr Trail to Pikes Peak

I live in the Springs, and my father came up from 1,200ft (been training heavily for months) and did this hike with me on June 3rd. Started at 4:00am and with several breaks including 45 min at Barr camp, we summited by 11:30. Such an incredible hike with so much beauty, elevation gain, history, wildlife.. etc.
After an hour at the top they closed the mountain road due to severe winds, we started our way down as originally planned and it was super windy. 60+mph winds. Made for a great experience. Got back to the car in just under 6 hours for a grand total of 14 hours up and down the mountain. Granted, we both are in very good shape and were prepared for this trip, but altitude definitely effects everybody. The last 3 miles for sure is the toughest. Just slow down some, deep long breaths, and plenty of water!!! (Which you should have started 24 hours prior to the trip, ideally) this was both of our first times hiking Pikes Peak. I definitely will be back again soon! Wonderful challenge!

Incline is quite the feat. One of my favorite trails to hike up, then with a beautifully rewarding 3 mile (approx) run down Barr Trail. First timers: Take your time going up, take deep controlled breaths, and stop as often as needed. Think "nice and easy" and you'll expand your energy the whole way, as opposed to exerting all your effort 5 minutes at a time and taking longer breaks. There is an obvious bailout about halfway that allows you to take the trail down if needed. Otherwise, Barr Trail will take you from the top of the incline, back to the bottom. It's about 3 miles, so it take some time. Including your trek up the incline, this can be a lengthy hike. Average is 3+ hours round trip. Though it's faster to trek back down the incline, I don't recommend this to anyone, your legs are tired, and going down is a knee waiting to blow out. Many still do it, I've done it, but not worth it in my opinion. So bring some water, trail mix, and don't expect a leisurely hike. It's incredibly fun, and beautiful, and very rewarding. I would suggest this hike to almost anyone! Bring a headlamp if you're starting in the later afternoon. Because you're on the east face/side of the mountain, and the sun sets in the west, the sun dips behind the peaks of Pike Nation Forest about an hour before 'actual sunset' I'd say. Relative to Incline trail/manitou springs. Good luck!

Excellent hike. Wish I would have pushed my jeep a little further, at least until the switchbacks started. Nonetheless we got to tack on an additional few miles of hiking. Getting to coma lake, summiting Blanca the next morning, breathtaking views of neighboring peaks, all made it worth it. Tough hike, good challenge.

Beautiful hike..!!! Made it to the lower of the three "lakes" and it was frozen solid. We hiked back to lower elevation where there was less snow and better melt to stay one more night. We will be coming back to this trail in a month once most of the snow is gone. Again, upper 1/2 of trail is COMPLETELY buried in feet of snow. Still, the whole trip was stunning.
