Gordon Benett reviewed West Ridge, Skyland, Vistamont, Clark, South Ridge Trail

On this beautiful fall day I wanted to try a few Mt. Cardigan trails, so I headed up West Ridge, then took Clark Trail up and down the very windy peak. To add some distance I looped Clark to Vistamont to Skyland, ultimately returning on South Ridge. Vistamont was particularly muddy, with steep sections requiring careful attention not to slip. An advanced beginner, I'd rate this combo loop on the hard side of moderate, with gorgeous views and exciting terrain throughout.

We did the long perimeter loop with a spur up Noanet Peak, 6.4 miles, 500' elev. Pretty forest walk on the easy side of moderate, heavy side of moderately trafficked. Lots of families, dogs owners, and mountain bikers enjoying the perfect fall day.

Easy loop with benches and pretty views. Makes for a nice constitutional when in town. Lots of dog walkers, joggers somewhat distracting - but hey, it's in a city.

Boulder Loop is a great intro to the White Mtns. The solidly moderate 900' ascent and gentle descent are a good workout, rewarded by spectacular views from the ledges up top. Our knees hurt the next day - but we're getting old. ;-) Hiking shoes and trekking poles advised.

Gordon Benett reviewed Mount Monadnock via White Dot Trail to Pumpelly Trail to Cascade Link Loop

This was a challenging hike for me, harder and longer than Monte Rosa-White Arrow or the Dublin Trail. The ascent on White Cross was VERY crowded; a school trip of over 100 teenagers was coming down as i started up, making it impossible to hit a stride. The views approaching the summit were spectacular on this clear fall day. Descending via Pumpelly to Cascade Link is longer but less steep and a nice change from the other approaches. This part of Pumpelly is entirely marked by cairns. Cascade Link, marked by an orange dot, was muddy and had some tricky, near-vertical root & rock parts. My cell phone died on the 5 hr hike so i didn't get a recording.

The Monte Rosa ascent is less trafficked and wonderfully scenic, featuring a pre-peak before summiting Monadnock. In mid-Oct it was pleasantly cool until I got to the bare rocks, when the wind and cold kicked in. Top was crowded and chilly. I took the White Arrow trail down, which as others have noted is challengingly steep. Go slow, choose your footing, and crab walk as needed. Worth it!
