you may need 4wd to get to the trailhead from the south. you can take goldmine road from the north. there is a sign for the spur up to jones gap. either way this is an easy and awesome hike and worth the effort. the spur trail to the top of the pluton is almost all solid rock. the view from the whiterock cliffs is amazing. my GPS said it was 4.5 miles round trip.

i did jacks knob to chattahoochee gap then headed north to unicoi gap. total distance is 7 miles and the toughest sections are at the beginning and end. in the middle is a beautiful hike with many near level sections along the way. there is a huge boulder field on the north side of spaniards knob but the rocks are smooth and easy to traverse. i stopped at henson gap for a break and soon after saw the blue mountain shelter in the distance. blue mountain has a long stretch of fairly level trail which was enjoyable. the last mile was steep and brutal and rocky.

go on a weekday in late august and have it to yourself which is what i did. blood mountain is unusual in north georgia in that a lot of the trail is bare rock so is not overgrown even in the summer. i have done this climb a dozen times so it was totally familiar and soon i was on the summit slab in the cool breeze. it is usually a zoo on weekends so be forewarned. i will return in october to see the colors.

i hiked from brasstown bald down to young harris. as always it was beautiful in the cloud forest and boulderfields above 4000 feet. i am amazed at the work that was done to complete this trail thru the solid rock ridge of little bald. the pink rhododendrons were in bloom. all was good until the last 2 miles. then you have a steep rocky rutted overgrown trail which is not maintained and in sad condition. also it was 90 degrees when i reached the end at bald mountain road. it was 7 miles total.

i completed the duncan ridge trail from wolfpen gap to slaughter gap then connected with the AT up to blood mountain. the trail is brutally steep for the climb to 4000 feet then levels off as it passes over an unnamed knob and the north slope of slaughter mountain. after that the trail was overgrown and narrow for the descent to slaughter gap. i met a young trail runner there who came up the coosa trail. we proceeded to the AT and finally blood mountain. it was sunny and warm on the summit rocks so i did not stay long. the return trip was tough and i recommend hiking poles. i enjoyed the remote silence of the duncan ridge trail as opposed to the crowd that one invariably encounters on blood mountain. total distance was 6.88 miles in 4.2 hours.

the trail to yellow face was totally overgrown so i decided to do waterrock instead. the rhododendrons were impressive as were the spruce and fir trees. the trail was a bit muddy due to the recent heavy rains and the temps even in june were quite chilly with the 20 knot winds. the top section is a bit rugged with plenty of rock stairs to climb. nice views as you would expect from 6200 feet up. i also checked out the browning knob trail .. much too steep for this 60 year old .. maybe some other time.

did the AT from tesnatee gap to wolf laurel top and back. the trail is in great condition with just enough boulders and ridges along the way to make it interesting. it flattens out after cowrock and cruises along a beautiful ridge until you climb up to wolf laurel which is a great place for lunch. there were some young ladies running the ridge this morning. i did encounter a couple of folks that appeared to live there in the woods .. just follow the clouds of smoke .. tobacco or otherwise. i am guessing the closeness to atlanta makes this trail very popular but still an awesome hike in the north georgia high country.
