Mark Hikes reviewed Strawberry Peak Loop Trail

Did the peak from Red Box Ranger Station. Came in at 7.5 miles up and back. Nice hike. Not a great trail, but very good views once you reach the ridge. Views from the peak arent as good as when going up, but there's lots of room for a picnic (or a nap as some other hikers were doing). :)
Minor scrambling coming up this way. I met a couple of hikers who came up the difficult side, and they were spooked enough to take the long way back in order to avoid going back down the same way.

Incredible views. Did this last Saturday and we could see all the way to Catalina, Baja California and Mexico, though I wouldnt have known that if the ranger hadnt pointed them out.
Also joined the Ancient and Honorable Order of Squirrels. :) Ask the ranger about that one.
If you're a beginner, you can make it. For experienced, it was pretty easy. Nothing too steep at all. Very gradual. And before you know it, you turn a corner and see the fire lookout station.

I take a lot of pictures so going up it took about 2.5 hours. Coming down was 1.5 hours.

Not bad. Very little shade so be ready for the sun. Views are ok but nothing special. I thought the best part was on the return, through the canyon. Nice shady, peaceful.
It's interesting that they have all of those points of interest on the map. But ultimately it's a crop of rocks sticking out from a mountain that are millions of years old. And a couple of areas where there were rock slides.
As the other hiker said, it's a little depressing that for the most part, you can see huge track housing. Always a bummer.

Just did this today. Pretty much exactly as described. Nice views. Hard scramble.
Nothing to add except that as I was climbing up that last .5 mile scramble I came face to face with a rattlesnake. It was steep enough that the snake was under a bush and my face was about 12 inches from his. He wanted as much to do with me as I did with him. I did manage to snap a picture after I quickly scrambled up a few notches and he went down, into another bush and stopped.
Then, after I was heading back, about 2.5 miles from the trail head, I almost stepped on ANOTHER rattlesnake. This one didnt like me getting so close and moving like I was, his rattle started right up, and I thought I heard a hissing sound as the snake started to raise up it's head. I know you're supposed to freeze then slowly move past the snake, but it was too late for that so I think I made a sound like Yogi Bear, ahhh, and quickly got down the trail. Right before the bend I turned back to make sure he wasnt following me and I could see him with his head up but he wasnt moving forward. The photographer in me said to stop and snap a picture, but the survivalist in me just told me to keep walking and try to make it to the car without getting a snakebite.
Just wanted to give a little warning. Keep an eye out for rattlesnakes. They dont want to have anything to do with us and will usually look for an escape route. Dont panic. Hold still, assess the situation, look for a way to get around the snake, and slowly make your move. :)
