    Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Us: four gals aged 51-56, avid hikers
6-1/2 hrs total time, 5-1/2 hrs moving
    Spikes and poles recommended

We would rate this trail as MODERATE due to the distance and elevation gain.

Arrived around 8:20 am to only a few cars in the beautiful new parking lot. Moderate hike up, slushsy/spotty snow started at about 3-1/2 miles. We had spikes but didn’t put them on, it was fine but was more work than if we’d just put them on. Some knee-deep postholing and one fall (me) :)

Most creeks were easily-crossible, I took out one trekking pole to cross a couple of the deeper/wider ones. Waterfalls are full and exciting.

At the intersection with the Thompson Lake trail we met up with a coupla groups that had passed us earlier; reports were that the Thompson route involved consistent thigh-deep postholing, and Granite Lakes involved a “river crossing” that these folks weren’t willing to attempt. We opted for Granite Lakes (our original destination) and headed out. The river/creek crossing was a little harrowing, but ok with poles. More and more snow and climbing over and through some branches/blowdown, made for slow-going.

Another group heading back from the lake warned that there are many tracks to get to the lake and there’s lots of postholing, so to be careful at which route we decide to take. At some point we saw tracks downhill and to our right, but contined straight ahead. Eventually the tracks we were following petered out and we checked AllTrails to find we were up above the lake (which we couldn’t see through thick woods) and should’ve headed off to the right (south) earlier. Not sure why I didn’t check AllTrails back then, but I was just following some tracks and all seemed ok (lesson learned). Since we were well past where we could have headed down to the lake and saw what looked like a clearing ahead, we decided to go a little further to see what we would find: lots of branches/brush to climb thru and more snow. In a minute we cleared the woods that separated us from a view of the lake below and climbed down a bit out of the snow to some exposed boulders and tree debris, sat and had lunch and rested and such. Looked down at part of the frozen lake and a waterfall across the basin.

We put our spikes on for the descent, that made life a lot easier. While we were putting them on, we were joined by a group of young hikers climbing through the branches who apparently followed our tracks. Later we were passed by another fellow who did the same thing. Oh well, lesson learned by all :)

Overall an adventurous day. We don’t care that we didn’t get to the lakeshore or anything. We had a beautiful day; peaceful, had the trail mostly to ourselves; other hikers were few and pleasant, most were properly-geared up; we had some challenging snow, creek crossings, some unintended bushwhacking; and all got back to the car safely, albiet a little sore and tired from the long haul.
