Galen Godbey reviewed Chestnut Branch Trail to Mount Cammerer

10/31/18 - Lots of forest walking and steady climbing until you reach the Mt Cammerer trail. The leaves were as close to peak as I could’ve hoped and weather was perfect. Just shy of 2:30 on the climb from the ranger station to the tower and I rushed return trip in 1:27 (with a bit of double-stepping). The views were incredible and worth the fasted effort. GPS clocked total distance at 11.5 miles.

Added as a stop-off on my return from Leconte (worth the effort) . I had the place to myself. What an appropriate name.

I thought the Alum Cave trail would still be my favorite route up when I planned the Boulevard ascent - I was wrong. I love every minute of this mostly solitary walk in the woods (very little traffic after peeling off at the 2.7 mile mark). From Newfound Gap parking to Myrtle point in 2:45. Spent a considerable amount of time there with the place to myself. Then from Myrtle Point to the Jump Offs (added on my return) and back to the parking lot in 2:40. I was beat by day’s end, but loved every step of my GPS’d 19+ mile day.

Beautiful. Even with deep snow, the entirety of the hike was wonderful. Moose, Steller’s Jay and lost of views. Scrambled up the frozen waterfall to Lake of Glass, but the trail disappeared into chest-deep snow. Loch Vale was lovely too. Truly, we loved it all.

Planned this hike with a hop over to Island Lake, but the weather had other designs. Steady, sloping climb through lots of forest. Maybe views, maybe not - visibility went to nil after we left. We’ll return for a revisit sometime again.

Steady climb. The views half-way up exceeded the actual lake view, but it was a nice hike with some icy stairs.

Remnants of the old trail are still visible for 90% of the hike. It’s closer to a hard than moderate by my estimation. Climbing starts from step 1 and relents very little. But, it was a lovely hike without seeing another soul (human). We did watch Steller’s Jays, hawks and lots of other wildlife scurry about. The views are grand.

Lovely views, lovely hike. The climb is never steep, just steady and moderate. We hiked up for sunset and soaked in our first Eastern sights of the Milky Way along with a hand-full of meteors from the Perseid shower. Other than a few passers-by, we had the place to ourselves.

Some steps, some switchbacks but generally a moderate climb. The parking lot leads down a winding trail for over a mile, so the return was a bit tougher than usual out and back climbs. Pack a jacket for the gusty stuff up top.

Not as much climbing as we anticipated. Saw handfuls of deer and weather. Jumped in the Lower Twin for a brisk refresher.

Solid hike with a nice view of the Bozeman valley (1.5m version). Perfect for sunset. Pretty easy all-around.

We loved this hike. As you leave the forest portion of the hike, be sure to take time to enjoy the valley views. The final climb of bouldering/tree hopping is steeper then some might feel comfortable completing (especially on the descent), but the lake is incredible (and cold - take an icy dip) and there are plenty of places to peel around the water’s edge to gain your own slice of Delta privacy. Also, we spotted a young black bear as we dropped back down into the tree line (not interested, much less aggressive).

My wife and I only had a few hours to spend in Pinedale, so we decided to take the first 4-5 miles of this trail out to Photographer’s Point. It was time very well spent. The views aren’t easily described and I can only imagine the reward of hiking well on into the Winds. We will certainly be back when time permits. Trail notes: easy and gently sloping but quite wet with snowmelt and mud. The portion we completed could easily be ascended in less than 2 hours with dry conditions.

Crowded but worthwhile. The main traffic thinned out after .5 mile or so. Tons of fish and a swan. Easy strolling. .

All the work is early, then it’s a gentle, sloping climb through the canyon with Tetons towering all around you. Moose, deer, pika and fresh bear scat all around. We took the boat across Jenny Lake later in the afternoon and choose to add the 3.2 return miles from the original trailhead. Had the trail to ourselves (a refreshing change from the climb in). We spent around 7 hours on trail (12+ miles) with a long sit and coffee at the apex of the canyon. Remember: the final shuttle stop is at 7p (June 2018).

*Only a ‘4’ because we had higher hopes from all the reviews.
