I can imagine the crowds in the summer. In late November this was a calm trail but the overflow parking says it all. cool water holes for splashing, swimming and cooling off.

slippery because it rained. better go barefoot than in flip flops (as we've seen people do pin the trail). take the trail through the forest to the other end of the beach. looks like some place from Lord of the rings.

Really really rough lava. Not for the faint of heart or balance challenged. We took the trail down to the beach and went around the long way (past the private homes) to the ponds. nice cooling off in the fresh water pond beyond the golden pond.

nice hike, not much shade. steep climb down to the river. in July the springs were only Bathtub warm, not hot. Could be a seasonal thing.

A flat trail, great for a lazy stroll. luckily the sun was behind clouds. no shade here.

the hike is quite boring, but the mine at the end is worth the trip

fun trail, not leading all the way to the top, but almost. We found a way by going around the rocks and clamber up from the back side.

Starting out on the Sierra Vista Trail, we soon veered off and headed for the mountains. Scrambling up the slopes was tricky and hiking sticks might be a good help here. We aimed for the rim where vegetation was thinner and easier to maneuver. Almost 3 hours to the top, return on the same route.
Three stars only because there is no real trail and you bushwhack your way up there.

Great long hike, 10 miles, 5 hours up, 4 hours down. The Narrows at the half way point could be a destination in itself. Several distinct vegetation zones.

It's definitely doable in a day but so much more fun as an overnighter. I went 4 times now, always with a group. Take enough water.

It's actually in cloudcroft not mayhill. great little trail close to town. The finish line/ turn around point gives you that view of the trestle bridge which still looks amazingly sturdy for 100 years.

Your calves might hurt the next day but it's so worth it. the cave just goes on and on. amazing formations all the way. set your camera to dusk/ dawn without flash and the photos turn out great.

only didn't get 5 stars because it's almost 2 miles to the river, crossing a canyon. super hike once you get to the river.

One of the best kept secrets in New Mexico. Super fun hike in water. We'll do it again and again. Wear water shoes! Bring the kids.

it's very exposed so it would be better to do in cooler weather. We were lucky to pick an overcast day. Also going back through the closed part of the catwalk was precarious. be prepared for some real rock climbing there. hopefully that will be fixed and better accessible in the future.

Unfortunately this trail was hit hard by the 2013 fire and if you remember it from before it is devastating to go now. Only the underbrush has grown back, so the forest floor is green, but the amount of dead blackened pines is sad to see. And it's too wide open now for any wildlife to make an appearance. We didn't even see or hear many birds. The trail is also littered with fallen trees. Not a problem to cross, but definitely needs maintenance.

What a shame we had a foggy day. The view could have / would have been fantastic, I am sure. Weather up in the Taos Ski Valley is pretty hard to predict apparently. But one thing is sure: It will rain almost every afternoon. So get up early and hit the trail by 7am. We made it up and back in 6 hours. No worries about finding the trail, it's very well marked all along. With 30 mi/hour winds I just wish we had gloves as well - didn't think we needed them in July. Glad I brought warm hats and jackets. Also, because we come from lower altitudes, we prepared by taking Ginko Biloba for a week prior, which helps with altitude sickness. It worked for us.
