Convenient from Arvada and surrounding areas. Very easy walk around Standley Lake with views of the Foothills. There are also prairie dogs to see right by the parking lot and throughout the trail.

Very nice views of the canyon. Some sections can have some loose gravel and some rocks and trees roots to trip over, but not very difficult. We were a little short on breath on some of the inclines, but we don't live in a high altitude area, so we were still getting acclimated. Most of the trail was shaded and comfortable even in the early afternoon sun.

We enjoyed this hike, it's a bit exposed to begin, but you end up with about half the trail in the shade. We did a slightly different route heading up Horsetooth Rock Trail (instead of South Ridge) and coming down Audra Culver Trail. The top of Horsetooth is very windy so hold on to your hat and anything that might get blown off. You get a nice view of the Rocky Mountains... the day we were up we could only see Long's Peak as there was some smoke in the air from fires, but supposed you can normally see Pike's Peak as well on a clear day. The wind was pretty strong on the Audra Culver trail, it kept us nice and cool.

We visited Red Butte Gardens on Arbor Day with free admission. We took the trail up to the Stone House Historic site and then attempted the small loop, but found that several of the trails that complete the loop back were closed for re-vegetation and we had to back-track to the same trail we took up. Nice view over the University of Utah and Salt Lake City and the Gardens are very pretty, we lucked out with timing and most of the garden was in bloom. The hike itself was easy, but very hot in the afternoon sun with little to no shade along the trail. I would suggest going on the trail earlier in the day or late afternoon to avoid the intensity of the mid-day sun. The gardens were the highlight rather than the hike most due to the lack of shade and diversity in the trail.

We went Saturday morning and the trail was not over crowded, but we did see quite a few groups as we made our way back to the lot. The beginning of the trail was a little steep with some loose rocks and gravel, but nicely shaded and not very difficult. Once you got past the first 15 minutes, the trail flattened out a bit and became exposed in the sun. There was a nice breeze that kept us cool and the sun had not gotten too intense yet so it was comfortable, but I can see this being a pretty hot hike in the middle of a warmer day. The views were beautiful with panoramic overlooking Salt Lake as well as some views down down Mill Creek Canyon up top. Overall a very nice short day hike.
